Help...16 Strand (2 Color) Square Braid?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I no nothing about braiding and need some help!

I am trying to learn how to make a 2 color square braid (whip?) It was made with 2 colors of paracord. 4 strands of each that doubled over a clasp making 8 strands of each color for a total of 16 strands? post-18296-048684200 1314914017_thumb.jp (I pulled the braid apart in an attempt to learn how to braid it but I failed) post-18296-046991300 1314914026_thumb.jp The finished braid formed square braid post-18296-014851100 1314915369_thumb.jp(whip like) post-18296-078301900 1314915354_thumb.jp Does ANYONE have a clue what I am talking about because obviously I have no idea! If anyone can tell me how to do this braid or even explain better what i am trying to explain I would be VERY grateful!

Hey Saint,

I know a little about braiding paracord. You can arrange the cord in many ways to get alternating color patterns. Basically your braiding will start buy bringing the highest outside strand ( left or right doesn't matter ) bring it around behind to the opposite side, split 4 and bring to the front of the side it came from. It should be your lowest strand on that side now. Then take the highest outside one from the opposite side and do the same, bringing it around behind splitting 4 on the opposite side and back to the front on the side it came from. It should be your new lowest string on that side. Hope this helps, good luck

any round braid done without a core will end up square. is the pattern in the picture the one you want to end up with cuz how you set up your strings will determine what pattern you end up with. braiding with 16 is really no harder than 8 same basic skills just more strands to deal with. if you let me know what pattern you want to end up with i will do a short tutorial for you on how to start the 16 strand.

YOU ARE MY HERO! You_Rock_Emoticon.gif The same as the picture would be great!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR WILLINGNESS TO HELP ME!

Now my next question is this one is done with Paracord, will I get the same effect with colored leather cord? I think this may be a stupid question but just checking if I have to do anything different? Thanks again!

well as far as the patterns go yes of course....i dont know about braiding leather strands without a core....it would kinda depend on what type of leather, how thick the strands are and stuff like that. you can definitely braid rawhide like that and maybe latigo lace, and i have braided suede lace without a core like that for leashes but it didnt hold up very well. of course once you can do the actual braid then you can do it with any material you like. just with any type of lace you must keep the finished side up whereas with paracord it really doesnt matter. i will try to get that posted tomorrow.

I am wondering if this is the pattern you're looking to do?

Trenza De Doce 12 Strings

If so the pattern is done with a little bit of a tweak. U2, O1, U1, O2, and on the other side it will be the same thing.

Sadly yes that was the item that I unbraided... 16.gif No I did not purchase it but it was bought for me...LOL It was what as know in the biker community as a "Get Back Whip" they were used to slap onto the hood of cars that rode up to close to bikers back in the day. Now they are used more for showing club colors.

Honestly I am not sure it looks like it maybe close but mostly what I want to do is show the two colors (equally) in a pattern the entire lengths. Also I plan (If I learn how?!?) to make these in lengths for about 2-4 feet in length but I want to be able to also have some girth (my life story right there) of upwards of 2 inches?

I wanted to respond to this first, as it is not actually true... the Gaucho braids are intrinsically round, even without a core. Of course they are more difficult and not many people do them, so if you are going with braids that most people do, this is indeed true, but just not true for the Gaucho braids.

Next, to Saint, to do this braid, start out with an 8. When you feel confident, move to the 16. It will be exactly the same, except where I say "two" it will be "four" so where I say "under two, over two" it will be "under four, over four". Set up so that you have two blacks, then two tans, on the right. Then set up two blacks, then two tans, on the left. So the blacks will start. First black, the top one on the R, goes all the way around the back of the rest, UNDER the two blacks on the L, and OVER the two tans on the L. Then the top left black goes: all the way around the back of the rest, UNDER the black and first tan on the top right, then OVER the tan and black. Then the R top black goes all the way behind the rest, UNDER the top black and the top tan on the L, then OVER the tan and the bottom black.

Think of it this way: Top string on the R goes all the way behind the rest, under two and over two. Top string on the L goes all the way behind the rest, under two and over two.

To do 16, it's exactly the same except top R goes all the way behind the rest, under four and over four. Top string on the L goes all the way behind the rest, under four and over four. Piece of cake.

You can change the color patterns in this braid simply by changing where you put the colors when you start out. Experiment, starting with the 8. Put all the blacks on the R, and all the tans on the L, and see what happens. Do two blacks on the top, two tans on the bottom on the R, and two tans on the top, two tans on the bottom on the L and see what happens etc.
