New to the hobby... Need advice.

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I'm new to the hobby and I was wondering where I should start. I'm looking to make watch straps and maybe bracers ( I think that's what they are called). I was wondering if anyone could set me in the right direction. I don't even know what types of leather I should be using. Any advice on tools, supplies, and books would be great. Thanks in advance.

Joe.

Is there a Tandy store nearby? Even if it's a couple hour drive away, it would be well worth the trip for you.

Out local store offers free lessons for beginners, and of course, could fix you up with all the tools and leather you would need.

I wish there was. The only thing we have out here is the usual craft stores like AC Moore and Michael's. I'm in the same boat as another poster I saw previously. Any book reccomendations would be great. I contacted springfield leather supply and Kevin was somewhat helpful even though i was a bit vague with my needs. IF anyone knows where i could at least read about the basics that would be great. thanks in advance.

Joe

Take a look at http://www.kingsmerecrafts.com/. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to find a week's reading about almost every aspect of leatherworking.

There's also a good set of tutorials at http://www.bowstock..../tutorials.html.

If there ain't a Tandy store nearby....you should go to Springfield Leather on the internet....they are even better than a TandyLeatherFactory store. Download their catalog (its free) and you should find everything you need to get started in this wonderful world of leather. Careful though.....what you are now calling a "hobby" can easily become your "profession!" Good luck and enjoy a whole new and exciting world!!!!
