My First Ever Attempt At A Pair Of Moccasins / Turn Shoes

Recommended Posts

I am relatively new to this forum, but had been lurking around for some time gathering information, tips, ideas, etc....Well I read an EXCELLENT tutorial that someone had posted, here it is http://paleoplanet69...ns#.UVmeVDff4nO and if definitely changed me!! I set about reading it over & over 20 to 30 times before I actually bought my first item and from there I started to get my thoughts & plans together and even after having purchased everything I need to attempt this.......I took a few days off and seriously thought about it. and why it's so important to me to make these. I mean, c'mon, it's just a pair of freekin leather slippers more or less....

My S.C.A.personea is of a Viking ( 794 A.D. ) by the name of Hrothgar Sonfiord. I also have a son 12, his name is Luki Sonfiord, and is coming along quit well with a blade.

So here are a few pix of my progress as I made my first Turn Shoe....I plan to add some flourishments to these, or maybe leave them be and just make a new fancier pair. I'm just not sure, there is so much more I want to do to them.

Iunno.....please leave comments & feedback, I'm a big boy and can handle criticism!!!

Thank you,

I saw that post yesterday and will start it tonight. Looks like it worked well for you. Any hints or changes you would make to the pattern?

Hi, and thanks for replying....I started out following the tutorial exactly, the first small change I made was after I cut out my footprint, when I stared to draw out the big "M" shaped template instead of measuring 1/4" from widest part of foot and around, I did it 1/2" instead, it seemed to fit better because I had noticed that moccasin patterns tend to run on the narrow side. Besides that, I followed the tutorial exactly until I had finished the lower part of the shoe. My next small change was after cutting the small T for the heel, I tucked it in and then stitched without rounding it out. I left the tongue at 3" x 6" and for my uppers, I had measured my top ( ankle ) cut which was 12 1/4" and made a rectangle upper 6" x 12 1/4" and then "X" stitched it all the way around. I used a sewing hole punch on the entire job just because it made it easier for me.

I need to add a sole of some type to them just not sure yet what to use....I have read about different materials like Vibram, Goop, and just plain flip-flop soles, just need to make a decision. Any suggestions on this part are helpful!!!

You are right about the tightness of the pattern. It should work great for a leather like deer or elk that naturally streaches. I modified the pattern by following some instructions from another source. I measured the circumference of my foot at the widest point and added 1/2 inch. that became the width of the M. Then folded it in half and followed the tutorial. I also lengthend the T cout on the top.

Soles have always given me trouble. This first set will be for around the house as slippers so no sole is needed.
