First Leather Wallet And Need Help

hey guys and gals,

so im just about ready to buy some leather from tandy leather but i've one problem ..... im a beginner ! and i've really not much knowledge about which leather to buy ! im thinking 3 oz .. would that be right ? and what type of leather ? i guess tanned cow hide ?

PLEASE HELP !

What pattern are you using/style of wallet? if you are going to do any tooling you would want Veg tanned.

There is a search box at the top right corner of the page. Your questions have been discussed many, many times before...you'll find great info on your questions if you search there. Also, there's no way to tell you what leather you should be getting without knowing what kind of wallet you're going to try to make.

And if you're new to leatherworking, you might want to start with something slightly more simple than a wallet, but...

thanks for the quick replys I like to jump in the deep end haha, ive made a couple of small things already , key fobs, knife sheaths, etc , i want to make a bi-fold wallet with maybe 4 card slots and a cash slot

hey guys i need more help , i had two pieces of leather of equal size and i dyed them , one shrunk almost an eight of an inch , what did i do wrong ?

Were the two pieces the same type of leather? Also, was the bigger of the two stamped or carved at all?

nope no tooling done , same size same leather same every thing

If you are looking for leather to make the inside, you want pig. It is thin, about the thinnest Tandy has. The outside will likely be veg tanned cow, but there are a lot of choices you can use.
