what is 'the right stuff' I was trying to practice in order to sew some Dyer style moccassins. So fairly heavy leather. getting better at spacing, etc.

hi, new to stitching and to the Forum. I've been working through stitching some scrap pieces trying to get the hang of beveling, using a pony, etc. I'm having a lot of trouble pulling the needles through (saddle stitch, lock stitch, ...) and find it almost impossible to do both at the same time. everything I've seen on you tube for example, seems to be a lot less effort than what I'm experiencing. I'm using the needles that the guy at tandy recommended (1195 I think) and the eye seems huge to me. What size diamond awl a needles/thread are most using to make this task easier.... thanks. Doug.
