Is This A Leather Working Tool? $5 At Auction

Recommended Posts

Nobody can tell me what it is. Zig zag wheel can be replaced. Says "genuine Chandler USA" on the wheel, and HP2 cast into the frame. Don

Looks like a scallop tool for straight edges. Grab it.

Well I already did grab it up for $5, but I had no idea exactly what it was. I did know it's old time heavy cast iron craftsmanship though. The table has adjstable spring pressure to hold material between the zig ag wheel and a roller wheel. Hmmm.

Good buy, they usually run $75-125 in the antique/vintage stores. Chandlers seem a little less common. It's a hand crank pinking cutter. Had a guy tell me they were originally designed for cloth and he uses one I found him on canvas bed trap material. I tried the one I had on chap and did OK with the pressure adjusted up a bit. It rolled right through chap but wouldn't go as well on 4-5 vegtan.

Pinkers are used in the shoe and boot world to ease edges where you will be bending the leather edge along an arc. You can save time with this tool as opposed to cutting the little Vs with scissors. When you bend toward the edge you use Vs, bending away you use slits. When pinking counter covers (which are thick dense veg tan), you use a special pair of large pliers that cut the Vs.

This is a hand crank pinking machine from the Chandler machine co in Ayer, Mass. It is used to cut a variety of edges for different functions or decoration.oom them up and contact them regarding different blades that are available. They will need to know the inner diameter and outer diameter of the blades for your machine. They used to have quite a variety of blades available, including straight, different sizes of pinks (zigzag), wavy, scallops, and even pinked scallops. I have the same machine with 3 different blades, and I use the heck out of them. You got a great deal, as the blades alone cost over $ 100 each. Chandler also made power driven linking machines, and may still.
