  1. Greetings to you, oh the masters of saddles. Maybe I should have posted in "How do I do that" but I hope to find here the knowledge somewhat more specific. My friends have brought me a spanish saddle to repair. Honest to God I have never done anything with saddles before, though they were encouraged after I fixed some bridle for them and now this. I will try to post pictures of the thing (my card reader broke) but judging from what I can see - the skirt needs to be fixed or replaced and somewhere inside the saddle the stirrup fixture ring has come undone so I need to get to it and replace it with a well welded one. Not to mention that I am at loss on how to quote this job, I don't even have the right thing for hanging the saddle while working on it. In my understanding there should be somewhat of a simple wooden pony for putting the saddle atop. Am I right? Could anyone of you tell me how to make such a thing in the simpliest way?

Gosh ))) this time it took me even longer ))) now half of Russia does leather work, where it used to be me and a couple of other fellows )))

  3. Thank you master ) you are very kind! Thank you!
  4. wooosh I'd love to have one like that) seriously very cool!!!
  5. My opinion, even though I am not qualified to comment here, I guess, but since I am here - I must say Veg Tan works great as for seats (think of saddles as of heavy duty seats) same for wallets, you'd have to get different weight of leather I recon, and from what I've heard on the vine - one ought to tool it first then dye it and then perhaps apply a protective coat which exists in a wide range of assortiment. I would be glad to be of service to you and even more gratefull if I am to be corrected on this matter
  6. Now thank you all guys and ladies! Upon reading all this I am quite overwhealmed...indeed I can feel the sensation of so many excellent leathermasters turning their attention to reply to my humble question. I thank you all very much!!! To add my 5 cents to the conversation - it now seems to me that the most important and correct tool for doing the fringe is patience and determination and when those qualities become armed by a sharp edge of whichever kind then shredding revolution starts. And since this looks like the true description of the case I am bound to become a buddist monk and become very patient, but as far as I know they do not readily accept girls into their holy ranks, so I must take a knife that I have and upon dampening the backside of leather press the ruler down and gently make a clean cut with a fresh blade. I must say that I have been using a Stanley knife almost since the beginning of my more serious leather working. Before that I was using a more traditional to Russia angle shoemaker knife which looks like this one here : I love my stanley knife and it is exactly the same as Karl from England have shown in a previous page, unexpected difficulty arouse just months ago when they stopped importing spare stanley blades to Russia... I mean we have the other ones that fit the knife but they are thin and they wiggle and become dull rather soon strop em or not... Rotary knife is something I have been always cautious about, probabbly because it looks as if it can go faster then I can think. ANd the round knife is a dream for me... I wish I had one... someday I will, but I am always shy to it as I am not too sure on how to use it... And the knifes that have a breakaway blade segment I use never as I do believe they are flimsy and in the end those are utter shite they are indeed even for office purposes ... I thank you all again, your works are great, I wish I knew a fith of what some of you know about building shotgun chaps, and at east a tenth of other leather secrets, indeed so, since my friends ask me for chaps I say okey someday and then try to figure it out, but when I see what say Chuck Burrows has to offer his customers I understand that there are many trade tricks ahead of me. I hope I will be able to contribute here someday, and I also hope that we'll become friends with you, sorry if I do not appear everyday here. Best of luck!
  7. Great deer skin shirt!!!! I envy!!!! Okay cool...now I need to understand what is what if my english kind of let's me understand what may ne a framing square then the concept of box cutter holder escapes my vision totally. I am very sorry if I make you feel like you are talking to a moron (sometimes plain everyday down to earth things are not within my philological knowledge). Really then how would leather not drag after blades and become uneven I do not forsee...wetting it must work if it works for you... That machine at Siegel it seems to be rather inexpensive must get... pity I am in Moscow nowdays. Are there any more Ideas?
  8. oh my.... now a stupid hobbit I feel myself indeed... so that is that thing which is also capable of cutting thin laces for lacing projects? I must have walked a thousand times past it while I was in USA and never bought it and now I only see blades for it... leather stripper I guess they call it though I doubt that machine would have cut me some chups fringe or would it? Buying fringe does not seem to be an option because then you'd have no choice of colour I guess. Still I am longing to hear any easy or better way to make accurate looking fringe and I do appreciate you mentioning my words in comparison with the way professor Tolkien's world reads.
  9. Greetings oh the mighty masters of the hides and rullers of swivel knives and all that goes with it. Well anyway sorry for my strange einglish, and this is my first post here. I have been wondering long enough on how do I make fringe. Seriously I wish I could find an easy way to do that. But as I try do anything on the matter - whatever I do makes me feel that I am inventing a bicycle all over again. So please tell me about all the ways about it.
