August challenge

The challenge for August is a finger cuts challenge. The challenge is on swivel knive cuts only. The pattern can be any that you choose based upon scroll work. Unfortunately I do not have a picture of finger cuts so if you are not sure what they are we will have to wait for some chalenge takers.

Don't feel bad oddball, I've been here for almost 2 years and I'm still waiting to find out what fingercuts are..... Unless it is what you do when using a head knife.... ouch!

Well, golly. That's setting the bar pretty high- guess I better go get the pogostick.

Bree, this isn't a competition, only a challenge. This only the second time I've heard of scrollwork in leather (the first was on a seat I think Shirley made) so don't feel like you're the only one who's new to this. The whole idea is to learn new skills for your leather working. Each of the 'challenges' helps less experienced members gain some exposure to different types of leathercraft. Those who do have experience just might learn something too! If nothing else, seeing the incredible craftsmanship in these works is pretty dang inspiring. Of course, seeing work like those posted is a bit daunting, if you're trying to beat it in competition, but this won't be graded. At least not officially .

Gotcha! Still my swivel knife work is nowhere even close to that work or the one Johanna posted. Sheesh these guys are not just good... they are fabulous. I'm just going to slip under a rock here and peek out from time to time and marvel at some of this work.

Note the second pic Johanna posted...."Best of Show, Sheridan, Wyo 2003". I promise you this: If I produced work that good, I'd still drop in time to time, but I wouldn't be here as much. I'd be far too busy taking the vacations that each saddle paid for.

Thanks for taking the challenge and posting your work. That is a great example of finger cuts for those who did not know.

Ok everyone WC set the bar high on this but it is not as hard as you might think so give it a try and you will be surprised at what finger cuts can do to enhance your projects.

Yeah, Wayne, and you're not so bad yourself, either! For you folks that haven't heard of WC, he is a fantastic leather artist in his own right- one of those guys that set the bar for the rest of us. I didn't know Al Gould did finger cuts, too. Thanks for sharing the pics, and the inspiration.

Is it cheating to trace the patterns first- does it all HAVE to be done freehand? (Not for the contest but traditionally?)

I watched Al on a video from the Last trade show in Ventura and he drew in his main lines and free handed the rest.

I drew my main scroll lines and transfered them to the leather just to make sure they were as balanced as possible. All other cuts were free hand.

I don't think this is exactly what the challenge is - but it's what I came up with. 1/4" hollowground swivel knife blade, a few touchups with a modeling spoon and since I tried and had a snowball's chance of ever getting circles down - I used a Pro Petal to do them. What is traditionaly used to finish scroll work? I'd like to try something that is suggested and get better pictures in the daylight. Sorry about the bad pictures.
