  1. Oh, most likely you are correct about bad technique. However bad design also plays a big roll too. it is difficult to explain my past designs that did't work out too well, because I no longer have them, nor do i have pics. Basically I want to try and build something as small as possible that will hold 2 magazines. So I try to attach the belt loops behind the pouch, but its very difficult to sew them in this configuration because the belt loop stitches run perpendicular to the mag poch stitches and niether one can go through the other or it would prevent the magazines or the belt from going through.
  2. Darn. I was afraid you were going to tell me that. Guess it is useless for items that will contact metal then.
  3. I was recently given a very old box full of tanned deer hides from the grandson of a hunter that has passed away. My question is, how is deerskin usually tanned? Or maybe how can I tell? For instance, is it usually chrome tanned? Or veg tanned? I might want to use some for a rifle scabbard or something similar, but don't want it reacting with the metal of the gun and causing rust.
  4. Anyone here have any advice for a new guy on how to build a leather double mag pouch? I want to build an open top design to hold two 1911 magazines. I have tried to design a few but nothing seems to be working out very well. Any advice? Or patterns you wish to share?
  5. Like saddle bags, only for people instead of horses. They look great!
  6. I have tried to make cartidge loops on more than one occassion with very little success. Is there anybody that can point me to a tutorial or give me some quick pointers?
  7. I see exactly what you are saying. Your holster looks good! I am very appreciative of all the help that the folks here are offering. It has opened my eyes to lots of great techniques.
  8. So I decided that rather than just throw this holster away and start on a second one, I would apply some of the things mentioned by katsass to this one just to see what would happen. I stitched it up close to the gun and that definitely fixed my loose holster problem. Its tight now! I also cut out around the magazine release as he also stated to do. I figure what the hay, might as well make some use out of this one as a test bed if nothing else.
  9. Excellent! I appreciate the critique, it has certainly shed some light onto problems that need to be corrected. Now I will go back to the table and build another one and apply this knowledge. Thank you, James
  10. Ok, but go easy on me, I know it's ugly and i still got a lot to learn! That said, here it is. I feel like I got the leather contoured deep into the trigger guard and ejection port, yet when I turn the holster upside down, the gun just falls right out. The leather just isn't very stiff.
