Feibings Pro Oil Dye Rubbing Off With Atom Wax? Need Help!

Recommended Posts

So I made my first dog collar today I used feibings pro oil dye. My process was:

I applied neatsfoot oil to leather let it dry. Then I airbrushed with 5 coats of feibings pro oil dye in royal blue. I let the dye dry, then I went to apply the feibings atom wax and it literally wiped the dye right off the collar. I was beside myself when this happened. I then wiped the collar with a white clean cloth and tried to re dye but the project got all messed up. Why did the atom wax wipe the dye right off the leather? I ordered from Springfield leather and they told me to use the atom wax after I dye. Please help.

Well, the Royal Blue is just a beast IMO. But I´d like to know whether you wiped of the blue stuff just to have some purple spots left behind? Expecially with blue and green I got to the point that you need to let it dry completely (!) and buff it like hell before applying any kind of sealing. I used resolene for the top layer some time ago and it was quite a challenge. But in the end it worked out fine bye letting it dry for a quite longer time (I let it sit for about 24 hours, might be more than needed but i wanted to be sure) and really intense buffing afterwards until no pigments are left on the surface (clean towel stays clean). After that I applied Resolene cut 1:1 with water with a cloth wrapped around a sponge using rarely any pressure and let it sit for about 15 to 30 minutes. It turns into some blue-purple-mixed colour (looks like ruined). After I applied a second layer of the resolene it returned to a really nice and full blue looking exactly like I wanted. I never trid atom wax, but maybe you just try it on a scrap piece of leather...

I've found that some dyes and some finishes just don't do well together, the only finish I've found that hasn't removed anything yet is Angelus Acrylic Finish. I've just started using Mop&Glo cut 50/50 with distilled H20, so I can't be sure about that either, but it might work. I would test each color on scraps till I found the color and finish that works well.

I'm not a chemist, but it is rather frustrating. I use Clear Lac a lot and it works on most stuff, but I was using USMC Black and it would totally dissolve that dye, however, when I changed to Feibings Pro Oil Black, I didn't have the same problem.

Did it wipe off the blue to have purple left behind? Well somewhat, but it mainly wiped almost all the blue off to the point where I could see the veg tan.

When buffing between coats should I be using something to buff with? Like neatsfoot or something. Also if I'm doing 5 coats and letting dry for 24hrs+ then buffing in between, were talking a 5+ day project any way to cut that time down?

Thanks for all the input!!
