What A Difference A Decent Press Makes!

Recommended Posts

I've been using something akin to a drill press vice to press my stamp tools onto veg tan, but never seemed to get good results, but just got myself a little 'proper' vice, and it's a complete revelation :D

Superb '3D' effect and detail I hadn't previously achieved.

What type of press did you get?
I recently purchased a Harbor Freight 1/2 ton arbor press and love it. It made a world of difference in the snaps I set. Looking forward to using it on other applications.

I took my 1/2 ton Harbor Freight arbor press to a machine shop and had them drill a hole in bottom of the ram. They also took one of my stamp handles and turned it down to fit the hole (they were concerned that making the hole big enough to fit the handle would weaken the ram). They put a set screw in and gave me a couple of pieces of 1/4" iron to use instead of that round thing that comes with the press. I also had them cut off the two bottom teeth in the ram. Now all I have to do to adjust the handle is raise the ram up and it "ratchets" where the teeth were.

If I were to get another one, I'd get the 1 ton press so that I could have a 3/8" hole drilled in the ram and in the round thing; that way I could use the Tandy or Ohio Travel Bag dies to set snaps.

Aah, now, it isn't a press in perhaps the way you think. I've worded it incorrectly.

It's basically an engineers' vice, but I can get much more pressure with it than the thing I was using before.
