Question On Finishing Procedures .

Recommended Posts

heres my example ,

i am making a wallet which i am dying oiling and finishing with satin shene.

Now my question is , do you finish the leather pieces completely before putting together sewing and burnishing the egdes , or do you satin shene the finished product when its all put together ?

I totally finish the leather (carve or tool if required, dry, dip dye, dry, buff, oil, dry, buff, finish, buff, buff, dry, buff etc. Then I assemble the project, finish edges with either lace or burnish depending on the project.

For wallets, I go on finish the leather, then assemble.

For holsters, I dye / oil first, assemble, then final finish (to avoid excessive flexing of the top coat when forming).

For larger projects, again finish last. Same idea - no marring of the finish from forming, stitching, squaring, etc....

I agree with the above. Finish all the pieces completely and then assemble.
