Grant's Heel Knot Tutorials?

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I've been trying to follow this tutorial for over a week now...

http://pineappleknotstutorials.over-blog.org/article-grant-s-heel-knot-one-strand-90275515.html

...but I'm not getting it. I get all the way through until the third pass (step 13) and then get lost. They said to parallel the original "working end" (maybe they mean "standing end"? I've tried going to the immediate right of the original working end and also tried the immediate right of the second pass -- neither works) of the 7x6 knot. When I do that, I end up with railroad tracks that never get split.

Are there any better tutorials for this that are easier to follow??? I understand pineapple interweaves pretty well now, but am not getting the third pass of the heel knot here...

As always, thanks for any useful info...

The easiest way to figure those buttons is to use a different colored string with each pass, meaning dark for u1/o1 then light for building u2/o2, then dark again for the u3/o3 pattern. Or use dark all the way through the u2/o2 pass and then switch to light. Once you get started, the proper pattern to split will show up real easy. That's how I pattern my Interweave on my Heelknots. I just increase the o1/u1 sequence until I can fill in with the same color to complete the o2/u2 work. Then I flip it over and use a different color to finish the o3/u3 work. That puts a nice set of stripes and the # depends on how much you built up the original button. I hope this helps, Brad PS by flipping it over I mean going to the opposite side so you don't end up with 4 ends to bury at the same point.

See, I tried that and it didn't help. :(

Maybe I should try the three-color tutorial, here...

http://pineappleknotstutorials.over-blog.org/article-grant-s-heel-knot-in-3-colors-90272068.html

I tried using different colors on each pass using the first link I posted earlier today, but it didn't help at all...

Also, when you flip it over, how do you know where to begin that pass?

The picture in the Grant book shows where to go on the start of the 3rd step, 2 up from the standing end. I just turn the knot 180 degrees and find that spot on the other side. Brad

Yeah...I just finished reading the part on the heel knot in his book just now...I usually cannot follow his drawings, but for some reason they made sense to me on this one more than the pics in the tutorials...especially where he talks about additional passes.

I'll read the link megabit posted too...

Alright. I just tried that tutorial I posted in the first post in this thread using a dark color, a light color, and a different dark color -- and it is still completely jacked up.

Would some kind soul that actually knows what they're doing (because I apparently do not) please run through that tutorial and let me know if the tutorial is full of crap or if I am? It would be very helpful if someone could confirm if the tutorial is correct.

I also could see the pattern emerge after I completed the second pass...I thought about just trying to continue that pattern just by sight, but I haven't tried that yet. I have to go to the range this weekend, so I will probably have many hours to try to get this right. (I usually qualify in the first firing order and then wait at the range for another eight hours for everyone else to try a few times...what fun...)

Thank you, KnotHead...I will go watch that now...

So...........the heel knot in Grant's book is the exact same as the three pass pineapple knot then?? I didn't know that...

Anyone have any other advise? It is still not working -- I am able to do the first two passes fine with no problems and it looks great. Then all sorts of unholy hell breaks loose on the third pass. :(

Pics would be great...

If someone that knows what they're doing could please go through the steps in the link in my first post to verify that they're correct, I'd really appreciate that.

If I knew what I was doing and someone else asked me to do that for them, I would do it to help them.

Thanks.

Ok, great...thank you for checking them for me.

Hopefully, the pics will help...I'm probably going to try to memorize that video too...maybe that'll help...

this is the one I followed.

Ok, so I tried following this video -- and it is not anything like the O/U counts given in the original link to the tutorial I posted in the fist post...at all...not even close.

I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I was pretty much able to follow the video, but it was really hard to see in some parts. I'm going to try again when I get home today. What I've done with the third pass is almost presentable, but there are a couple of errors...but at least it looks a lot better than what happened when I tried to follow the overs and unders in the link in the first post. :(

Ok, is this correct???

gallery_29082_1990_77771.jpg

...because if so, those instructions in the link in my first post are very much incorrect. I was able to complete the knot using the youtube tutorial. Those overs/unders on the Dan Callahan tutorial I posted in the first post in this thread are just completely wrong and now I need to go transcribe them correctly for my notebook.

And now I'm angry that I wasted almost two weeks trying to follow a very flawed set of instructions.

INCORRECT third pass, per link in my first post:

Up O2 U2 O2 U2

Down O2 U2 O2 U4

Up O2 U2 O2 U3**

Down O2 U2 O2 U5**

Up O2 U2 O2 U3**

Down O3*** U2 O2 U5**

Up O3*** U2 O2 U3**

Down O3*** U3*** O2 U5**

Up O3*** U3*** O2 U3**

Down O3*** U3*** O3*** U5**

Up O3*** U3*** O3*** U3**

Down O3*** U3*** O3*** &Out

CORRECT third pass, per the youtube video:

(Starting directly to the right of original standing end)

Up O2 U2 O2 U4

Down O2 U2 O2 U2

Up O2 U2 O2 U5

Down O2 U2 O2 U3

Up O2 U2 O2 U5

Down O3 U2 O2 U3

Up O3 U2 O2 U5

Down O3 U3 O2 U3

Up O3 U3 O2 U5

Down O3 U3 O3 U3

Up O3 U3 O3 U5

Down O3 U3 O3 Bury ends / finish.

...And I am still very irritated by this. I think I am going to have a drink when I get home.
