Couple Of Questions For A Newbie

Hey guys, I have a few questions on which I can probably find on here but I'm new to the whole forum thing. Just a few quick questions...

I want to make a custom peice for a family member for his bow... Its just a peice of leather thats about 5 inches by 3 inches, I would like to do some tooling and maybe a concho or two. My question is I want to be able to do this in bulk, that way I can make multiple for practice and even family and friends, so what kind of leather do I need? can I just buy a big sheet or roll and cut it to my shape I want? that would be ideal, if this is possible can someone send me a link?! can I just cut it with scissors or do I need a special cutting tool?

I'm also interested in bulk items, Like key fobs or wallets, bags, etc... I can't find anything on tandy leather, anyone got any ideas?

One place you may try: Weaver Leather, in I think, Berlin, Ohio.

I personally deal with them, find them to be really good people.

Use their "Contact Us" info, . . . call em up, . . . tell em what you want to do.

Only problem you will have, they only do wholesale, so you have to be set up at least in if you live in Ohio with a Vendor's license.

Thanks dwight! As far as buying just leather sheets in bulk is there anything in particular I need to know? I've researched Tandy and find tons of sheets but I'm not to sure what would be/could be used to tool on? I'm not very good and still practicing so this is just something I can get for a descent $ and not break the bank, qualitiy doesn't have to be top notch. Also, can I just cut whatever shapes I want with scissors?

For tooling, you need a surface that does not yield, bounce, move, and is solid. Kinda like a piece of steel, . . . but marble is better. Tandy sells tooling size pieces for about $30 to $50 if I remember correctly. That piece will do you good.

You can also maybe get a broken piece of a marble counter top at some lumber yards, . . . small piece of marble at a grave marker place, . . . be resourceful and cheap, . . . most of the time it pays.

Weaver will cut the pieces of leather you need, . . . sized correctly, . . . etc. if you want to buy a bunch. They also have pre punched key fob stuff, . . . other things like that, . . . you need to search their catalog.

Cutting leather is best done in my shop with a very sharp drywall type razor knife. Scissors are for real thin leather only in my shop.

If you have done your research, then you know that you want veg tanned leather for tooling. I would contact Weaver and / or Springfield Leather Co. and explain what you will be making. They will be able to help you choose thickness. For practice, you'll probobly want their #2 or medium grade tooling leather. That runs about $4.00 - $4.50 per square foot.

As far as cutting, I use a utility knife with a new blade for thicker leather. Some of the old timers use round knifes, but a utility knife you can pick up at any hardware store will serve you well. Scissors will work for thin lining leather, but for anything with real heft to it, I stick to the utility knife. I personally find it easier to replace a 25 cent safety blade every few projects then to sharpen a good knife.
