Fish Scale Pattern Help!

Recommended Posts

I am looking for the best advise I can get on doing a fish scale Filet Knife sheath. Can anyone give me any advise on this subject?

Do you have a certain stamp you use? If so; what brand? Etc.

Thanks,

Vikefan

I use two different tools. Barry King sells a 'scales' tool that is shaped like an upside down 'V'. I have also used a 'mulesfoot' to do scales when I teach my large mouth bass figure carving class. I also read in one of Al Stohlman's books where he used a scaled veiner tool to stamp scales on a fish. I haven't done a knife sheath, so I do not know how this would work for you, but if you check out my Facebook or blog pages, you will see the scales belt that I recently completed. It might be what you are looking for.

Either way, good luck.

Never could find scales on you blog pages and couldn't get you on facebook. What brand swivel knifes do you prefer as I am thinking of replacing my Tandy one's.

How about a rounded mules foot?

I still say that you can make your own from pieces of tubing. You can oval it, leave it round, and make them any size you want. Cut to length, and then remove the backside to leave the scale shape that you want.

I made a post on my blog earlier this year showing how I was taught to modify a seeder tool to make scales. You can see it here

Thanks Vikefan. I've been blessed with the opportunity to learn from some very talented artists over the past few years. One thing you'll find out when carving or stamping leather is that there are usually a lot of different ways to achieve the results you are looking for. For scales, you can use the seeder like I showed in the article on my blog, or a veiner or mule foot as Al Stohlman shows in some of his instructional books. Some of the custom tool makers are making stamps these days that are specially designed to make scales for snake skin or dragons. Try as many of the different techniques as you can and decide which one is easiest for you or which one gives your desired results. If you are not happy with any of the suggestions so far, experiment with different tools and see if you can come up with something that does.

I am working on a filet knife sheath right now and trying to get the fish scale down before I stamp my sheath. When I get around to finishing this I will post pics.

This is what I think I am going with:

Here's my finished sheath. I used an old Tandy stamp U 857, but it is very time consuming to do.... Take your time and I would recommend doing it from start to finish with no breaks, keeping your rhythm and spacing the same.

Good luck and I am looking forwards to seeing your results.

This is my version of a fish scale pattern I use on my fillet knife sheaths. Very simple and gets great reviews from customers.
