Question Re: Peckard's Leather Dressing

Hi all, I was just wondering what the concensus is on using Peckard's Leather Dressing (a petrolium based product)? I'm fairly new to leatherworking and I'm not certain about this but I seem to recall reading that using petrolium based products on leather isn't advisable. I am looking for some kind of grease or lubricant for braiding but it'd be nice to know if this product, if good, is useable for more than just braided projects.
