GrampaJoel Report post Posted February 15, 2011 Ed I tried to order the surface plate you have shown, and it seems that (per ENCO) the shipping code only applies to items that can be UPS shipped. I called ENCO when I tried to order and kept getting the $170.00 charge for shipping. They set me straight. The shipping price for the $89.00 surface plate is $170.00 to my destination in SOCAL by Truck. But thanks for the heads up. I started an account with them anyways. BearMan Report post Posted February 15, 2011 My Goodness Joel, The one I ordered, came from Atlanta,, about 4 hours from me,, with no freight. But,,, when it got here,, one of the corners was chipped. After I contacted them by email, they told me to discard it, or use it as it wasn't worth shipping back to them, & they are sending out another one, to replace the first. I couldn't have asked for any better service! I'm sure my Son will be taking the chipped one home with him, the next time he comes up. Come to think of it, everytime I've had any dealings with ENCO, they've been excelent to deal with. I guess your situation must have something to do with where it's going too??? For those prices I would look for free granite counter top pieces. I usually see granite on the local Craigslist, may try freecycle too along with the usual stoneworks castoffs. King's X Report post Posted February 16, 2011 Wow! I guess I got a deal on mine.......I bought a headstone, sanded and polished on both sides for $50 with measurement of 12"x 24" x 6". The 24" x 24" was $100. They loaded it for me too! But you are right, that thing was heavy taking it up to the second floor of the house. Good luck! They sent it free from Nevada. When i got mine they had the weight of plates on the site. But when i looked this time the weight wasn't on there. Maybe the difference is the thickness. Any way I asked how much and he said i'll give it to you and I..being of sound mind, took it and waddled to the car, fast. Try local monument makers too. ENCO evidently has numerous "Numbers" to give you. I called, ask if they had them, said, "yes". I asked how much. $121.00. Sorry but your website says $89.95. "Let me check that, You are correct, $89.95." "Okay, I hear you are shipping that free to some areas of the states." "Oh no! That weighs over a hundred pounds and UPS won't ship it, has to go by truck." "Okay, thanks for the information." I didn't want it that bad anyway. johnggrg Report post Posted April 8, 2011 Why waist the money? I have a slab I bought from a Headstone shop. It is 12x24x3 granite. They had made a mistake on the name and I got it for $20.00 out the door. I talked with him for a few and he said there is always a stone with a mistake. All I did was put the printed side down. That leaves me with a very smooth side to work with. Save your money. Go to a place that sells headstones and monuments. Best $20.00 I ever spent. Then save the other $80.00. particle Report post Posted April 9, 2011 I got a free sink cut-out awhile back from a guy that does the granite counter tops for my dad's apartment building projects. My dad asked if he could set aside one of the cutouts for me. The guy was trying to be helpful, so he applied a fiberglass mesh to the back and epoxied it in place. I suppose he was trying to strengthen the slab. Nice gesture, but I had two problems with it. The first being that the mesh scratches up my table top. Second being that it creates an uneven surface on the back, which actually increased the chances of cracking the slab when you start pounding on it - which is exactly what happened. If you go the way of counter top sink cutouts, make sure they don't glue anything to the back so it will sit nice and flat on your work surface.
