Leathercraft/Carving Book(s)

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, new person here with a question.

In your opinion what would be some good books to buy about leathercraft and/or leather carving? What I am hoping is for someone to be

able to direct me to some particular books instead of just providing a link to a retailers website that lists numerous books on the subject.

Thank you

In order to help you decide what books might help you the most, it would be helpful to us to know what kind of leathercraft or leather carving you might be interested in doing. There are lots of different things that people do with leather, and there are a lot of books out there that cover specific areas of the craft such as belts, billfolds, figure carving, saddle making, braiding. With a better idea of what you are interested in learning, I'm sure we can point you in the right direction.

Clay is correct, there is huge spectrum of posiblities for leather enthusiasts.

If you are interested in tooling the first book on the list in my opinion is "Sheridan Style Carving" by Bob Likewise. I consider it the bible for toolers.

For information on how to build projects I recommend "Making Leather Cases vols I, II & III" by Al Stohlman. These volumes cover everything from wallets to rifle scabbards to shave kits and the techniques taught apply to almost everything made out of leather.

There are also some good books by Al Stohlman and Peter Main regarding coloring and finishing leather. All of these books are available through Tandy.

Like Clay said if you can tell us what your interested in we can steer you in the right direction.

Hope this helps....

Bobby

As another noob that has the desire to learn I'm gonna jump on this thread. My goals are this -> Belts, Wallets, variety of pirate hats to eventually making classic style briefcases & satchels.

So with this in mind, where can the learned folks of leatherworker direct a total newbie to educate myself on this wonderful hobby?

Stohlman did a lot of good books. Check out your local Tandy dealer or just go here.

I'm going to take a little different spin on books to get. After you've figured out what type of leatherwork you plan on attempting, my suggestion would be to get these two books first. The Leatherwork Manual, and Leathercraft Tools.

The Leatherwork Manual is a general book on tooling and a good all around starting book to get an understanding of what (and how) to do leatherwork.

The second book, is probably one that should be bronzed...the Leathercraft Tools book explains the purpose of tools, how those tools are used, and most importantly, how to maintain them.

I also agree with Bob (hidepounder) on the books for the different areas of leather crafting. These books are a tremendous source of information. I also recommend finding some old Leather Crafters and Saddler's Journal magazines to thumb through. This will give you some ideas on what type of leathercraft you prefer to take a stab at.
