Hi everyone. I'm new to Leathercrafter.net and leathercraft.

This is my first effort at tooling. I went straight for a fob rather than practicing on scrap leather.

Any advice is welcome as I really don't know what I'm doing. Thanks for looking.

And did I mention... I now hate rivets. :P

Nice design, I would suggest to keep working on the beveling so you cannot see that "chatter". There are many good tutorials here that can walk you thru this technique and many others. Look for the "pinned" threads.

Your work simply shows that you are a beginner. You do need to buy "Tech Tips" by Al Stohlman. It is one of the best books available for the money,

to give you lots of information and how tos.

Keep at it, many folks have begun leather work knowing nothing about it.

I've got Stohlman's "The Art of Hand Sewing" and "Leathercraft Tools" on their way from Tandy and will order the Tech-Tips book when the budget allows. Thanks for the suggestion.

I definitely noticed the chatter... I'll work on it.

My first post and I am newbie number one. My first was the Tandy starter kit with the wallet, money clip etc. The first mistake I made was to glue the wallet to a piece of green cardboard. What a mess to try and get it off after the tooling. The beveling turned out like yours did. The first tool I used was the backgrounder that came with the kit. My first mistake.

After finally looking at a pdf of the Tech Tips today recommended here on this site I found out that just about everything I did was wrong. Hah I love it. The double loop stiching on the wallet was also a fiasco. But I loved every minute of it.

I have gleaned some good info from this site and it is my first visit today. I was showing off my new wallet to my co-workers and the ooohed and awwwwed. A lot they know.

I just love the smell of leather and gunpowder.

Thanks

Another book that I would recommend from Tandy is called "Leatherwork Manual" by Al Stohlman, A.D. Patten and J.A. Wilson. The book covers tool techniques, stitching, and gives a few basic patterns. It seems like it was designed as a short textbook for someone teaching a leather working class. Might be worth checking out.
