BearMan Report post Posted April 27, 2010 Hi Everybody, Well, Here's what I came up with, kind of a test. It's 28 oz, that's a heavy as it can be with this size head, without adding external weights. It's 2 5/16" dia., & it has a Bolivian Rosewood handle. Just by feel, it feel heavier than 28oz,,, but that could be just because I'm used to smaller weight ones. I can see where it would be handy for driving big punches, & things. I did it in the "Elite" style, because of having a larger 5/8" internal structure. I used the larger structure, just to make sure it would be strong enough. I could make it somewhat heavier by adding a weight like what Osborne uses on thier rawhide mauls,,, but that wouldn't look all that great, & it would change the stlye somewhat. Until I received your maul I was primarily using a round maul with a tapered head. I was not totally happy with it and that is why I decided to try one of your mauls. Your maul is much better balanced and feels very natural. Your maul also works much better when I'm stamping with my Pro-Series basket and geometric stamps. I have had trouble in the past with them bouncing, especially when I'm tired and I don't hit them straight on. Your maul is less fatiguing and much more forgiving. I have several mauls and plan to eventually replace all of them with your mauls. Overall you maul is much better made, looks better and well worth the additional cost. The weight alows me to hold it closer to the head for my swing. Better control I would say. It is hard to tell if it is any different in the ricochet department than the 19 oz you made for me, as I have been useing the 28oz so far for heavy blows mostly. I have used it a little on tooling and it works great for getting deep impressions with the first blow. I'll be using it a little more as I get used to it's weight, for tooling. Rebound is ok, it doesn't sink into the object being hit and stop, but it also doesn't bounce back like a socker ball. I like it completely. I wouldn't ask for anything to be changed about it. It is by far the most beautiful tool I own, and I look forward to putting it to good use on some heavy hides. Thanks for your efforts to give us some old-time goodness in the tools we use every day, something that seems to have been missing in recent years. I'll jump back in with a report on how it works, but I can't believe it will be anything less than wonderful! Thank you, Dave -- awesome gift Brother!
