Pricing Album Cover

Recommended Posts

I like this statement on another thread

My advice would be set your price where it needs to be for you to make money and not worry about what everbody else is selling theirs for. If you worry about what somebody else is selling their stuff for you will never have any piece of mind. Sure some may be a little better quality but a lot will be worse quality. JMHO

But I thought I'd still ask. I've been approached in the matter of being commissioned for art work for a bands Album cover. That means I would be tooling out a piece of leather the size of an record album and could be a lot of detail in the Sheridan style with 13 letters hand carved for the bands name and probably the name of the album of which I would prefer stamped letters. I've carved out super detail before but this is for a piece of work that will be seen my many unlike a bag or portfolio. Any idea on prices, its for a friend but have to draw the line on something that takes awhile to do. Much obliged to everyone's reply in advance.

This business is becoming my only one!!!! yeah!!

Yep, that sounds like pretty good advice. Also sounds like you state your opinion pretty well, so likely you n yer buddy can work it out ("its for a friend but have to draw the line on something").

Personally, I don't really even discuss with people who charge by the hour. Don't even really listen to their "reasoning". Seriously, to pay by the hour means the SLOWer guy makes MORE, and I just won't REWARD a fella fer bein' slow. Nope.

Exactly! Anytime I see someone spouting of the time it will take tells me that are stroking someone. Think like this: One of the true masters can do a project in 40 hours. He gets $100 and hour so this is a $4000 project. We need to be fair so you send it out to bid and the hacking beginner bids the job for $25 per hour. He obviously should get the job. He sets out working and 700 hours later the crappy work is done. This guy tried and worked HARD. Devoted his life to it. Now the bill is $17,500, for bad work. But the guy tried, and worked hard. A job is worth what it is worth, nothing to do with how long it takes you. If someone is willing to pay for it then they were not overcharged. As for the album cover, if this is a real band, they should be paying real prices. I am guessing that if you do the work for free and they sell 10,000,000 albums there is no plan in place to spiff you an extra $50K or so. Charge what it is worth and all is good (free may be what it is worth if they are going to make you famous). Edited by electrathon

Yeah, that could be worth something. I'll shoot HIGH and therefore we can come down, depending on whether or not his eye starts twitching....... :dunno:
