finished cutting about 180 feet of string from a disc

Recommended Posts

I just finished cutting about 180 feet of string from a disc. I was thinking there must be a better way of doing this. I have a string cutter fashioned somewhat after the hansen's cutter. It seems to me that if there were a way to hook a variable speed motor up to a foot pedal like on a sewing machine, then have some way to clamp the cut string between two rollers that would leave both hands free to guide the string through the cutter. Has this already been done, does anyone have any ideas?

It would work better with leather than with rawhide but the main problem is the difference in thickness especially in a full hide. They also dry cut them with a scroll saw or a band saw and then you true them up later. That is how it comes from Hereford Bi products. Or you can order a vacuum packed whole hide from them. I don't like string that is cry cut and it is just as much work trying to fix it!

i agree with alan. i've had to use alot of dry cut rawhide lately, and i hate it! it would be faster for me just to start from scratch, but it's too cold here now to build my own.

personaly, i prefer cutting tring by hand. i woul think that if oyu had a cuting machine, you would loose some of your control in cutting. maybe i'm just a little flakey, but i like getting ot know the feel of my strings before i even start working with them.
