Should The Leather Be Damp Before Handsewing?

Obviously a noob question but Im going to be working on my first project tomorrow and not sure. Its 4-5oz veg tanned going to be saddle stitched.

No;

I wouldn't sew damp leather as the thread will cut into it.

That....and I find that wet leather wants to "grip" the awl some....with 4-5oz and a decent awl, you shouldn't need any trick help.

Damp leather also tends to mark very easily and when sewing there are a LOT of opportunities for marks.
