My German Shepherd Portrait

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I made this embossed German Shepherd Portrait for my wife for Christmas. It is embossed out about 3/4" at the highest point. I used rubber shavings from a shoe repair shop here in town for the embossing putty, since I hadn't ordered any from Hidecrafters yet, and used sculpted leather plugs to hold the foremost ear out where it should be. This is my first embossing project of this type and size. A master craftsman from my Guild, Ernie Harris, whose specialty is embossed pictures, is teaching me the tricks of the art.

The upper jaw, tongue, teeth and gums, and lower jaw are all on different levels, and the teeth are cut and lifted as well. I thought the embossing would be the hardest part, but actually getting the acrylics to the colors and shades I wanted was harder.

My next project is planned to be another Shepherd in a different pose, which I have ordered the embossing dust for, as the rubber shoe grindings don't take dyes or acrylic paints well.
