Video Or Manual For Timing An Artisan Toro 3000?

Recommended Posts

Howdy all, I am having some trouble with skipped stitches and tried resetting the timing but the manual that came with the machine is pretty much worthless IMO. Anyone know of a video or manual for accurately setting the timing on these Juki clones that is actually comprehensible? I know I could call Cobra Steve for help but would rather have something on hand to refer to occasionally if at all possible.

Yes, call Cobra Steve and ask nicely for the DVD.

Now very seldom does someone knock out the feed timing, usually just the hook timing.

So.

Put feed leaver in middle.

Without thread take the needle all the way down and up 1/8 to 1/4 inch and loosen the bolt for the clamp for the hookshaft on the mainshaft rod, set the hook so it is just intercepting the scarf of the needle and retighten the clamping bolt.

That should get you going.

Steve can give you more exact measurements.

If you need to retime everything, what the hell did you do to it? No panic, it just takes a while, and the DVD.

Hey Art! I was hoping you would chime in. I have an older DVD that has Cobra Steve in it when he worked for Artisan but it doesn't have anything concerning timing on it to my knowledge. The sound on it doesn't work either on my Mac computer (sounds like chipmunks on helium). Is there a newer one out now or something?

Thanks for the timing explanation. That is just what I did but the part about putting the feed lever in the middle throws me. Assuming you are talking about what I call the stitch length lever, I tried moving that around and it has no effect on the needle moving up or down so I don't understand that part of it. What am I getting wrong here?

By setting the stitch length lever in the middle you neutralize the forward/backward position of the needle bar and feed dog, taking them out of the equation. All you need to adjust it the position of the pickup point, with the needle bar in a centered position, relative to forward and backward.

Well I'm far from qualified on this subject but since I just had a lengthy talk with Steve about timing my class 4 I'll chime in. I was having the same problem with the leather lifting and skipping stitches. The video Steve sends out is helpful with where the bolts are for timing etc... but not very specific. He told me to bottom the needle out and raise it 3/16" exactly. I had to mark the needle (not easy) also put stitch length to "0" then put the hook to so it is just at the needle. now there is some clockwise/counterclockwise play in the hook assembly (sorry don't know the proper term) and I can't remember which way I had it so trial and error for that. I do agree an in depth video for timing would be AWESOME.

Thanks for the clarification on the stitch length lever Wiz. Makes sense now.

Scary Leatherworks, I appreciate the input. What you said concurs with what Art said. I had previously moved the position of the needlebar in trying to adjust the timing because I couldn't get the hookshaft bolt loose. Boy was that thing tight! Almost broke my allen wrench getting it loose. Anyway, I hope I didn't mess things up when I moved the needle bar. I moved it back to where I thought it might have been before but it was just a guess really. At least I now have the hook intercepting the needle at the right point I think. Thanks for all the help guys. Hopefully things will smooth out now. This forum is an especially wonderful thing for folks like me who live in a small town far from a big city where one might be able to find a knowledgeable sewing machine mechanic. And of course there is always our good buddy Cobra Steve too. What a nice guy.

Hi! I just e-mailed you a copy of the pdf Engineer's manual for the Juki 441. It gives details on ALL adjustments on your machine! I think you will find it is infinitely better than anything you currently have.

Happy Holidays!

Dave

By the way, it does show the timing adjustments on the DVD that I made, when I worked for Artisan. Thanks, Steve
