what kind of rawhide?

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty new to braiding, been just playing around with it for about a year or so. I haven't done anything with rawhide yet but I am wanting to try and have been looking through alot of the posts here and was just wandering about something. i have seen discussions about horse and of course cow rawhide, but what about goat. is it any good for braiding? i have heard of people using strings cut from goat leather and heard that it is very strong. sorry if this is a stupid question but I was just curious. it is also cheaper that the other rawhides and thought that if it could be used for braiding i might buy some without the worry of screwing it up.

Hi... Goat rawhide is fine for braiding, depending on what you're braiding.... THe only thing about the goat, is that it will be thin. THe widest use for that product is probably drums and musical instruments, but it would work for braiding, as long as you require thin strips. I don't think strength is any better than cow or horse, but then again, it's thinner than those.

Best wishes,

Kevin

I bought some goat hide from tandy because it was cheap and wanted to experiment with it just like you Rick. The problem I found was that it was way stretchy. You can't ( I couldn't) braid with it very well because you can't get your braid tight at all. It might be fine for cutting some strings to practice using a string cutter but it's not really the same feel as cow hide. I don't have any experience with horse hide so I couldn't help you compare with that, but I'd take horse over goat without ever havin' worked with it. Matter of fact, I still have the goat hide here if you'd like to try it. I just cut a few strings from it and put it down.

That's just my 2 cents worth but wait around and see what the real braiders have to say. You can get some good rawhide from Tejas Industries (800-692-4043) to try relativly cheap.

Hope this helps you some, Bret.
