Storage Questions

Recommended Posts

My wife says my leather is taking over and spreading. She would like me to move it into the basement with my wood shop. I am concerned that the moisture level may be damaging to the leather. Does anyone know of any guides to humidity and can recommend steps to remediate it?

Basement is a bad idea UNLESS you have an area you can store with controlled humidity of about 35 to 40 percent. We lived in an old house

some years ago. My stash of leather molded badly because of the high humidity prevalent most of the year. Dehumidifier is a must.

Dehumidifier is a must

I agree 100% with Ferg. I've worked in a basement for five years now, and store my leather there. I have a dehumidifier that I run at 40% but only need to do so during the warm months (May through October).

If you have a rack or shelves you put your leather on i would make sure their not right against the wall either espically the north side because of the humidity.
