Art Report post Posted July 9, 2008 Hi Milen, What you are probably seeing is thread deterioration and needle punch out. First the thread deterioration; when thread sits around for awhile, it will cause the bonding to deteriorate and flake when running through the needle. You may be able to strip off a layer or two of the thread and remedy this, but just a spritz of Fiebing's Liquid Glycerin Soap to the outside of the spool every two or three weeks will keep this from happening. Second, the needle will "punch out" the underside of the leather because the leather is not well supported, there is not a lot you can do about this. My needle and awl machine is a little better at not doing this, but it will happen to some extent on most machines when you are doing items that are stiff. Art Hi Art. Have a question about the Toro 4000 that you may know. So the Toro sews fine and all, but the bottom seam looks a bit "torn". There are small flakes that are coming off the thread like it has been jabbed with ruff needle. I did change the needle with new one and still the same. Maybe the tension is to tight or something? What do you think. Will try to get some pictures to support the question. Thanks Milen
esantoro Report post Posted July 10, 2008 if what Art has written doesn't solve the problem, take a look at the needle plate you're using. If the edges of the needle slot are sharp, they can fray your bottom thread. I experienced this with a flat feeddogless needle plate and had to take a file and emory paper to the edges.
