Ruger GP100 holster

Hey all,

I was jones'n for all the great stuff here. Glad the powers that be got it worked out and the site no longer locks up my computer.

Anyway, here's some pics of my latest holster. I kept it pretty simple since this was the first one I've done with any type of welt ...and 6 layers of 6/7 oz leather is a PITA to hand sew.

As always I learned from this one and would do a few things differently if I did it again but overall I'm happy with how it turned out.

Comments or suggestions are, of course, appreciated.

For a Ruger GP100 4" barrel

6/7 oz Tandy leather

Feibing's Mahogany spirit dye

Tan-kote finish

Nice looking holster. Ya done good!

For attaching pics, we have a thread about it but with the new software, I don't know if the same instructions apply. I'll have it figured out by tomorrow and I'll check back in then. Somebody (the wonderful folks who've upgraded the site for us) may have a little sooner input.

Nice work. I especially like how you have built up the welt to accomodate frame/trigger guard width. Very tricky work there, and you got it right. Nice edge work also.

Great job skiving the layers of the welt. Really a nice transition from trigger guard to barrel area. And beautifully burnished too.

How does the snap behind the trigger guard work? I looks great but also looks like it might be a little tricky to draw quickly.

Nice work! I like the rear-trigger guard snap. I had an old holster like that from Bianchi for a j-frame and it worked well. It was fast to draw, but slower to re-holster because of the snap placement, but I am not usually in a hurry to re-holster.

I like the edges and burnishing as well. I second the comments on the welt being perfectly done.

The strap works ok. The position of the strap is actually one of the things I'd change. I'd bring it up closer the grip so it grabbed the trigger guard a bit more. Right now it retains the pistol if someone were to pull on it from behind or if I draw it straight up. If I put a little forward pull on it during the draw it'll completely bypass the strap.

The strap releases well though. I've got a stainless steel tab on the back to stiffen the snap-tab and it releases with just a push of the middle finger. It happens rather natually while obtaining a firing grip.

The forming is just tight enough to hold the gun in place with the holster upside down. I'm thinking of adding a retention screw just below the barrel at the frame ...we'll see how ambitious I get.
