I just got some good leather from Wickett & Craig. I was going to try Hermann Oak based upon a recommnedation but was having a hard time getting since I'm not buy quanity. I just started working w/the W&C and it has been easier than the low grade I started w/from Tandy.

Also got my fist dummy guns. I like working w/the dummy guns more so than the actual gun. No worries with damaging them.

I always prefer the dummy guns. As pointed out, no worries about damaging them. Also the expense of the dummy is usually recovered with the first project.

Dummy guns are not made for every handgun model, so I also use actual firearms for much of my production. Last year I had several requests for holsters to fit a handgun model that has been out of production for about 30 years (after a million or more had been produced). So, I bought the pistol, filled 4 orders right away, and have made 6 or 8 more since then. The expense of the pistol has been fully recovered, some profit has been made, and I expect to make a dozen holsters or more each year off of this one pistol.

From a practical standpoint, it appears that some major holster makers stop producing holsters for a handgun when it has been out of production for a few years. It just doesn't fit in with their business plan (volume production for items in general demand). This leaves an opening in the market for small producers to serve the needs of those owning older handguns.

That's okay with me! It allows me to make a decent profit on the investment in a quality handgun, and take a tax deduction on the cost of another addition to my gun collection!

I tried my first W@C leather a little bit ago, went all out and got the good stuff a side. I must say it is the nicest leather Ive worked with. Ive tried all grades from tandy and hand picked them out and some were ok to pretty good but the WC stuff was just amazing. It dyed so much more evenly and took tooling and such much easier. The thing that got me was the dye just seemed to even out far better with it. All in all just seemed like some really good stuff. Ill be ordering more.

JRB, if you don't mind, what "grade" and weight of leather did you get from W&C? I've been wanting to order from W&C but due to time restraints I've had to run to Tandy to get some leather quickly. How was the ordering process for you? Thank you!

Peter

7/8 oz. holster utility grade. I got the plain (undyed) and they offer drum dyed. They sent me samples of all their colors.

I ordered over the phone. Very friendly and quick delivery. The offered to send me samples first but I didn't feel the need.

I would still like to try Hermann Oak.
