Sewing Machine For Wallets

Recommended Posts

I've done as much possible searching as I could but couldn't find anything. I am interested in getting a relatively inexpensive sewing machine where I could be able to sew simple wallets (8 ounces max). I'm hoping to keep it under $400. Is finding a machine that can do that without leaving a foot mark on the leather even possible? Thus far I've been handstitching all my wallets and I would like to explore machine stitching for fun.

I appreciate any guidance!

The one I have will do what you want, but it costs a lot more than $400 unless you can find a used one and only want to do a straight stitch...and then they're around $500-$600.

I think your budget is going to be your biggest obstacle in getting good machine to do what you want. I would stay away from any home machines and the heavier duty ones just cost quite a bit more than your budget, at least in my last quite a few years of researching and buying machines.

Singer 211 will do it...and you might be able to find one used for about that, but lately the ones I have seen were more. Mine was a 211W155 and it is a compound feed (Dog/Needle/Walking Foot). I just bought an extra set of feet and ground the tips off smooth, since it had other methods of feeding the material. It is plenty heavy duty enough and changing the stitch length was amazingly simple.

A Singer 31-15 is a straight stitcher that can be fitted with a roller foot that would fit your needs. They are used on western boot tops sewing the intricate stitching. Make sure you use the smallest pulley possible on the motor, or get a servo motor. If you look hard enough you could find a 31-15 for about $200, I bought mine for less than $100
