Purchased Some Bk Tools, What Should I Get Next?

Recommended Posts

Here are the tools I ordered today from Barry King

  • Swivel knife 1/2" barrel 3/8" straight thin blade
  • checkered beveler size 2
  • smooth beveler size
  • Lined, scalloped veiner size 2
  • Horizontal thumbprint size 2
  • Lined veiner size 1
  • mule foot size 0
  • Bar grounder27, 7holes

I'm pretty excited to replace my craftools with better ones, and I'm wondering what you guys suggest I buy for my next patch, which stamps? I'm new to sheridan style so i'm not sure what my priority should be other than a decent beveler. I picked out what seemed like important ones from King's recommended size list for small/medium work!

You have started out with a good combination of tools. My only recommendation would be to get some different sizes in the tools you bought. For example your 27 bargrounder, 7 hole will be to large to fit into small areas. I have a 3 hole and use it quite a bit. As you progress, you will notice which tools really don't fit, so the need for different s sizes. I recently bought an "0" size checkered beveler to use on tight curves. You are difinitely on the right track, just start doing some work and you will figure out the rest with experience.

Good luck,

Terry

I'd add undershots/lifters in a couple of sizes.

I would also think about a camoflage tool or two and a seeder, they are used quite a bit in Floral Carving.

Congratulations, you'll love the Barry King tools.

After you get the items listed above (particularly the center shader and leaf liner!) you might want to think about getting quality flower center stamps. If your craftool ones are the older ones that leave a good impression this probably isn't very important. In my case, the ones I've bought from Barry King are far better than what I had and they are now pretty much all I ever use for flower centers.

I also agree with having a few different sizes of veiners and thumprints. They come in handy.
