  1. Hi there, I've signed up for my first leather class and need to bring tools. I know some of you clever people have some great ways to travel with your stuff! Im also not sure what tools to bring? It's a figure carving class. I was looking at an ammo case and my husband said he''d make me a small wood block for a tool holder. I'd love your ideas and pics if you have them. Thank you!
  2. First attempt at utility case

Thought I’d share my first attempt at making a case. It’s based on the Utility Case shown in The Art of Making Leather Cases Vol 2. page 60 with different dimensions. The handle, Handle No. 20 page 23 (same volume). Oak leaf carving on left side panel based on CitzenKates post on this site: Demo: Oak Leaves. Only experience with leather working I have is that a couple of weeks ago I picked up the Tandy Deluxe Leather Carving kit. Got tired of flowery bookmarks and coasters quite rapidly and wanted to really push myself. Laid out/measured up the cutting patterns in Sketchup before hand. Ran into trouble trying to figure out how long to make the handles and couldn’t find any advice or comment on handle length in the above-mentioned Stohlman book; upon assembly discovered the handles are a fair bit too short! Thankfully still usable, but it’d be more comfortable for each handle to have been 2 to 4 inches longer. Not sure if there’s any way I can address this after the fact though. Also discovered that I hadn’t thought through where the latch would end up… did get a latch but didn’t lay out the location beforehand so if I were to attach a latch it would end up smack dab in the middle of the carving on the front panel. Now looking for other strategies to close the lid - almost thinking maybe snaps? And the next fairly major oversight is that I mounted the handle shield too to high. This results in the inability to close the lid fully since the flap hits the D-rings. Am wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to modify/remedy this issue? Can see from the photos I have some more burnishing to do on that top panel… Critique, criticism, suggestions, modifications to improve the case, additional finishing, etc. much appreciated.
  3. I finally broke down and got myself a high quality tool, a Barry King Edger. The problem with nice tools is that I really want to keep it protected when not in use. This one in particular likes to roll well, so I need something I can stash it in right away when I am done using it. I am guessing the end product will be similar to a sheath, maybe with a clamshell like opening so I can snap it shut for storage. I have not been able to find any threads on the topic, so I just wanted to ask and see if anyone had any samples or solutions they like for protecting a single tool like an edger. Thank you, Andy
  4. Here is a sheath I made this past weekend. This is my 5th project I have made. I used a scrap leather piece that I got in a remnant bag. It holds my Buck 110
  5. Guitar Amplifier Cover

Hello friends! So I have a question for the group - I’m interested in making a cover for my guitar amp out of leather (of course LOL) and I’m curious to know what leather weight would you recommend? If I tool it, I will use veg-tan, but what other leather would you recommend? My design includes a slot on top for the handle, and an open bottom with a belt across it to hold it in place. Since this is for my extension speaker cabinet, I also want to make it sturdy enough for me to check it into baggage check-in when I have to fly it (same leather weight as a suitcase I suppose). for you guitar heads the cab dimensions are the same as a 5E3 fender deluxe. thanks y’all - looking forward to your suggestions!
  6. Here's one of my tattoo "Flash Card" wallets. I've done many over the last few years and this is one of my favorites.
  7. Hello again! My brother makes a lot of high-end pens and wanted me to try making a pouch for some of them. I took more time than I thought but turned out fairly well. Thanks for taking a look! -Ryan
  8. I'm a big knife fan, one of my favorite patterns is the Case Peanut. I currently have 4 of them. This is my second molded item...a pocket case for this small pocket knife..... This is a synthetic purple model....and the slip pays homage to that by being dyed purple inside. Dark green stitching. Pretty pleased with it. Started a work-carry molded shesth with my younger son today for his Leatherman tool. That'll be my most complex item yet.
  9. Hello. I'm still pretty new to leatherworking. I would like to make an iPad case for a friend. I have ideas for a design, but I don't know how I would add stability and protection. The cases you can buy from the store have a hard inner sheet under a thin, fake leather. Does anyone know what that hard sheet is made of, or what might work as a substitute? If all else fails, I might just use heavier leather without an inner sheet. Thanks!
  10. I picked up a new smartphone a little while back, so I needed to make another case. Relatively proud of this one as I tried a couple new techniques on this one that I'll be using in my future work. Critiques welcomed!
  11. Ok after having to undo 2 hours of hand stitching because of a up!! UGG its finally finished! Decided to make another smartphone case but went with a bit of tooling this time, wanted to do another project with a wood grain look to it so here it is. Since we are limited on size of files we can upload and I am tired will just set the link up to the imgur photos I already have set up http://imgur.com/a/2fY0Q
  12. Was a little bored so figured I would make myself another case for my phone. This is just a prototype that I had in my head figured I would give it a go. Only screwed up just a hair when it comes to the buckle and strap I wanted the strap to go all the way around the case even on the bottom well I kind of screwed up the measurement just a hair after I stitched it to the back. Ah well was an easy fix just cut the part with the buckle off and stitched to the front like I had originally planed just no strap on the bottom is all. I have my phone in a protecitive case already as I am a bit of a cluts and this thing is drop proof from up to 10ms but I hate having it ride in my pocket so this case has a slot for a belt loop. Phone sits nice and snug in the case. All hand stitched and all rounded edges did not want a typical square container kind of bag.
  13. Just finished this briefcase and thought I'd share. Purpleheart and aluminum handle with a cotton vintage cloth lining. I tried to keep this one crisp and clean with as little fuss as possible. It's a lovely balanced bag to hold. The handle pivots very freely on the bag so no matter how you hold or wear it , it always stays vertical. By swinging the handle towards the back it creates a clever stand for the briefcase. Comments and criticisms are welcome.
  14. Here are pictures of a Growler case I did a few months ago. Hoping my brother will take it out in public and show it off at Mad Anthony Brewery in Fort Wayne. Check out my website, www.leatherbyjon.net
  15. Hello. it's my today's work. Happy new year!
  16. Iphone Inlay Phone Case

Been searching for years and I finally found inlay Iphone cases at Tandy. What I have seen previously is taking a generic Ebay phone case and cutting leather to glue on top. the result of this however is a short-lasting case. Does anyone know of a supplier of the actual case for Iphones besides Tandy? Here is a link to what I've been looking for: http://www.tandyleather.com/en/product/iphone-6-inlay-case-kit-2 I would really like to keep my customer price around 20-30 and that is impossible with these kits Tandy has of course! Thanks for your time Derek KD Custom Leather Granbury, TX
  17. Here are a few things I have created recently. There is a Hair on Laptop/messengers bag, with zippered front panel that allows access to internal pockets mounted to the front inner wall, and storage for briefs and papers built into the zippered front panel, the lid also has a hidden panel with glove snaps for additional storage of briefs and papers, there is an internal pocket for a laptop (17" laptops fit awesome in this) and a rear storage pocket for books, or notebooks, with a final pocket on the rear wall to allow additional papers or briefs to be stored. LOTS AND LOTS of room in this bag. The hair on cow hide is in purple and black, and the sides are made of laminated pieces of veg tanned that have been dyed to match the colors of the hair on hide. I laced the sides with premium calfskin lace and did it in an Australian double loop stitch. The pencil bag is made out of the selvage of the hair on hide, and is a wide mouth design. The clutch is likewise made out of the selvage from the same hide and pairs very nicely.
  18. I've been making these cases for sunglasses. Thought I'd share.
  19. This case holds 2 harmonicas. Dyed dark brown with hand tooling wolf design. Stamped paw prints inside case.
  20. Custom order requested by a shaving enthusiast who found our page on Etsy. Pretty pleased with how it turned out, wishing I traveled/shaved more so I'd have an excuse to make one for myself. Let me know what you think!
  21. Ola folks! Last week I was at my brother's, who spends half his life above a drawing pad, and he asked me if I could make a sort of case to store a A3 drawing pad, pencils, sharpener/eraser, combined with a flap that doubles as a cover and a holder for the sheet that he's working on. So we did some brainstorming and came up with the design as shown in the pictures. 1) The walls are basically layers of leather cut out in strips of 1 cm (25/64 inch) build up till about 1,6 cm (5/8 inch). 2) Underneath that comes a sheet of leather that covers the whole thing, but doesn't fold over on the front over the whole length. It only closes the main compartment for the drawing pad. 3) On top comes another sheet, that gets glued/stitched to the walls of the main compartment, and folds over and closes the compartments for pencils etc. I hope it's a bit clear what I mean from the description and the drawings, if not, please ask! Now for the input requested: 1) Does this look viable construction-wise? I warned him that it's going to be a bit bulky/heavy, but as he's like a 6ft 6 drawing giant, he said that's not an issue 2) The stitching bothers me. I'm planning on gluing the walls together first and then attach the top and bottom. But how on earth will I be able to stitch through 2 cm of leather? Pre-drill holes in the walls first, glue top an bottom and pierce those with an awl? 3) Anyone got an idea on how to attach press studs to the outside of the walls? It's to get the smaller compartment to close. After that is complete, I need to attach a big flap, consisting of 2 sheets of leather with some thin hardboard (or something similar) in between, that he can fold close so it's resting on top of the case (just as big as the major compartment, so the rest stays accessible), with his drawing on the inside, or open so he can draw on the flat backside. I'm thinking of maybe placing magnets on the edge of that flap and in between the walls and the top leather sheet and bottom sheet, so it's easily open-able and close-able in either position. If it's easier I can draw that up aswell and include it in a next post. So yeah, there you have it, big (crazy) plan, for which I would really appreciate some input from the way more knowledgeable people around here! Cheers, Aäron
  22. Holster

I had a friend contact me and was wondering if I could make her husband a holster for a 1911 and how much. I told her I will get back with her after I do some research when we are done with the vet reunion this weekend. What I was wanting is some opinions as I have never done this sort of project. For one, is it a big pain in the a$$ to make? I love challenges but don't know if this is a challenge or a headache. Also, if I can get some advice on making one if I do it. She is supposed to send me some pics of the gun and what she wants on it. I am supposed to get with our commander Friday at the reunion to check measurements on the 1911 he has.
  23. Hey guys! I had some not so great scrap leather hanging around that wasn't quit good enough to use for something I'd sell, so I thought I'd prototype something new. It's a case for an iPad mini. It has one main compartment with a belt with a buckle that goes around the whole case. On the back, a notebook or papers could be stored under the strap. For the hardware, I just used an a buckle from an old belt my wife doesn't use anymore. Anyway, have a look and let me know what you think. -Nick
  24. New Carry On Bag

This is a carry on bag that i just finished. it is my first work of any significance. My orignal plan was to add a lot more tooling to the body and lid but i soon realized that my skill level is just not up to it at this point. so i added the celtic cross on the ends and left it at that. I used 7-8oz leather so it will hold it's shape in everything short of a plane crash. Anyway, i'm happy with how it turned out and welcome feedback. thanks
