How to apply fabric to leather

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if it is possible to fuse fabric to leather. Would I need to use glue?I want to have a fabric flap on a leather bag but want to make sure the leather and fabric areas have the same feel, hence my idea of using glue, or fusible webbing to accomplish this. Thank you so very much in advance!

Hello. Yes it's possible to fuse fabric to leather. I believe I've seen such things done on YouTube

Melissa,

I have tried fusing fabric to leather using a spray on adhesive but did not have much luck. Maybe it was the type of glue that I used (bought it from JoAnns) but it made the leather bumpy and difficult to work with.  Sorry the other "gentleman" who responded told you to go to youtube.  This is supposed to be the place to ask for help.

I use 3M Super 77 or High Strength 90 to glue fabric to leather, which works extremely well. Spray glue both sides, sitck them together and I use an iron to get out the wrinkles and really set the glue. However, the issue is the edges. Cloth will fray along the edges if you don't use some sort of binding or anti fray spray( sold at joannes). On the purses I make, I like to use synthetic fabric like nylon or polyester so I can melt the edges with a lighter to prevent fraying. Cotton will fray forever.

Lol wow. If i was being critical of postings I would be forced to point out that you posting your failures is about as useful as this "gentleman's " posting about YouTube.  Good thing I'm not here to be critical or judge the intent of other people's postings. I'll leave such things to a "lady" like yourself

I second the use of super 77 or 90 spray as @Colt W Knight mentioned. And cotton does fray a lot..
