Tandy Splitter

Recommended Posts

So, I know the Al Stohlman head knife is not something I want to add to my leather tools due to the poor quality of the steel.

Has anyone good or bad things to say about Tandy's splitter?

This was the one they had on sale earlier this week:  https://www.tandyleather.ca/en/product/craftool-deluxe-leather-splitter  It was listed at $200 U.S.

Okay, I really NEED a splitter, unless I want to just continue using Tandy's overpriced kits!

They have the deluxe splitter for same for $274.00 Canadian this weekend. Going to go for it. Being In Canada has its disadvantages when it comes to buying leather machinery from elsewhere. There's not a lot available here, and you have to pay hefty shipping and custom fees.

Did find some info when I did a search, and seems it's a pretty decent machine.

There are entire threads on this site about the splitter on sale.. seems to pop up every year when their sale happens.  I read through some, and opted to keep on looking for an older splitter and bypass the sale.

Yin Tix, I only was able to find ONE thread. The price right now is about as low as it will ever get, and I really don't want to wait for something better to come along. Saw a video of the exact machine I'm planning to buy, and they guy was saying, "WOW, that blade is really SHARP. You need to be careful not to cut yourself."

There's some other stuff I am wiling to wait for, but this is something I would really like to have now, so going to take the chance on it.

I never buy anything from Tandy unless it's on sale, or something that's really cheap to start with. For instance, got a package of 5 scroll stamps yesterday for $13.00, and a bottle of gold dye for $3.99.

[sigh!] Okay, for better or for worse, I just pulled the trigger on this. Ordered it over the phone, and will pick up tomorrow.

Edit: feeling jealous of this guy's work bench! Will have to figure out a way to mount the splitter in my rather tiny work space!  This is the model I ordered.

Dwight

I got mine on black friday a couple years back.

You WILL HAVE TO polish the blade, . . . which is a cheap way of saying the blade needs a good stropping.

I used a piece of 7 oz about 5 inches wide, . . . contact cemented it to a very flat pine board, . . . loaded it up with polishing compound and went to work.

You loosen one end, . . . spin the blade 180 degrees, . . . lock it down, . . . strop it a bit, . . . and put it back into place.

Has worked well for me.

May God bless,

Dwight

Hi Dwight,

Going through the website and saw your comment. Could you please make video about how to use this machine? I got mine too but got stuck so many times. I did polish the blade, it's sharp but can't make it work.

Hope you can do a short video to demonstrate how to use it.

Happy new year to you :)

Hi @jayker2002

I have a splitter also (but not from Tandy). I polished the blade on mine too and when I returned the blade to its original position I found that I couldn’t split leather with it. The problem was the alignment of the blade to the top of the roller must be perfect. It took me a few test tries but eventually got it. Hope that helps.

Hi,

Could you please send me some photos of the machine then I can see how it works? I got the same problem with you. After I polish the blade, I can't use the machine anymore. Did try so many times but still doesnt work at all.

Thank you & Happy new year!

Here is a link to the a very similar splitter to mine.

when you’re setting your blade... you must align the sharp tip of your blade with the very highest point of the roller exactly straight.

so.. the blade must line up 2 ways.  1) Looking down - must be straight across with roller (I used the shine off the steel roller to line the blade).  2) use something to put between the roller and blade to measure the height at each side of the blade (then it can be adjusted to any height after setting).

hope this helps.

Hello,

I didn't see any link from your comment. Please share it again. I know someone using the credit card to put in between. Credit card is 1/16" thickness then from there you can know exactly the thickness.

It’s more important to have the very edge of the sharp blade in line with the exact top of the roller.

It looks very easy with him.. but not really easy with me thou lol. Because I wanna thinner the card pocket for wallet (so that the size is a bit bigger). I did try sometimes and it just cut a bit in front then get off the leather. I dont know what is that problem...

At 3:14 in this video, have a look at the placement of the blade against the roller. This is how your blade should look.

then you can adjust the thickness to what ever you like.

if this doesn’t work, I’ll just have to call over to your place and fix it for you!  oh dam... I don’t know where you live? :P

wow, that looks really nice. I will try to do it on my machine.

I live in Toronto, Canada. Sorry about that.
