I've been doing some lacing and using the typical c.s.osbourne #41 lacing needles with the 2 prongs - I've been dealing with pull-out and splayed sides. One thing I haven't figured out yet is how to reset the prongs once they get flat... Is there a method to push the prongs back up once they get a little flattened? Thanks

I used the plan by Randy Steffan, found here: https://leatherworker.net/forum/topic/20586-stitching-horse-plans/ I modified the plan, and made the jaw vertical instead of angled. I really don't do a lot of punching holes by hand in heavy leather, so the ergonomics of angled jaws was unnecessary. Otherwise, the dimensions are the same as in Steffan's plan. Oh, I forgot, I made the jaws 2 inches taller than what's specified in the plan. I made the jaws by laminating strips, since I don't have a bandsaw large enough for this job. First I cut the Maple into four strips, each 21 inches long and 1-1/2 inches square. For each strip, I cut out of the shape o…

Angled stitches with Diamond chisel or French chisel punched holes are something I can do relatively well now. However, some patterns that I buy have round holes which result in straight stitches. There is one pattern on which I want the stitches to be angled. I do have the correct sized diamond stitching chisels but the pattern is a little complicated and I am concerned that I will punch the pieces in the wrong direction and make a mess of it. I do not have spare leather of that specific type for corrections. So I'm wondering if there is a way to get some angle on the stitches when the punched holes are round? I have a vague recollection of a video somewhere that s…

Why is Ritza thread considered one of the best? I have been using a variety of threads, from ones on Amazon to the Rhino thread from SFL to, recently, Ritza. I frankly see not much difference between Ritza and others which I consider good. Some are bad in that they are too extra-waxed or under-waxed, both of which can be managed, or too loosely wound but other than that, I find that Ritza is no different from many other, more reasonably priced ones. I wondered if there is any specific reason why everyone recommends Ritza so often.

When shooting for the falling-dominoes effect on the back as well as front side of a saddle stitch, is there any extra benefit to casting to change which thread crosses on top, as compared to placing the second needle through the hole in position so they cross that way? Put another way: Do you other folks here get better looking slanted stitches on the back side when casting versus putting the front-side needle low in the hole? It's dazzling---in both "wow!" and "gah, my eyes!" senses---how much information there is to be found on this stuff now. It seems pretty broadly understood, at least practically, that when saddle stitching in slanted holes, changing the d…

Hello everyone I am starting a new adventure and I am making leather collars and leashes for dogs. I am currently sewing them by hand but I would like to invest in a good/resistant sewing machine. I am definitely not an expert and online I am find a lot of different opinions about this topic that are a little confusing. What would you recommend buying for a first timer? I am looking around on e-bay and similar websites and for my budget (500-600 CAD) I only seem to find Omega machines (to be precise model 307 or Walking foot WF24LNZZ). Just to be completely transparent, I am planning to sew thickness of 3oz / 3.5oz natural leather and/or 3oz of natural leather plus…
