  1. I meant to say 'run all eight laces through it.'
  2. Just end it with a 4 strand knot (often called a foundation knot) and run all four laces through it. You want to make it fancier, make a pineapple knot around it.
  3. I've attached many round braided straps to totes using a what Grant calls a two-thong four-part applique braid (Plate 185). My straps are done with 8 thong (no core). You can see them at the Following page. http://www.andersonleather.com/leather_tote_bags.html I'd be sure to finish the ends better than Grants.
  4. Now realizing that you are using a different braid than I use ...I have some correcting and editing to do to my initial post. I referring to using the edge braid on Grant's page 299. I have braided around corners many times. What I do is mark the holes in a straight line to and from the corner, then I indent the corner hole a bit and braid around the corner like it isn't there. In regards to the ending of this braid ...if you are using a single lace in a forward three holes, back two ...with the tucks = when you come to the end you continue just by going forward two and back one using the same tucks.

    ABOK

I just thought I'd mention that there is another book titled 'Encyclopedia of Knots and Fancy Rope Work' by Raoul Graumont and John Hensel - Cornell Maritime Press, Inc. that is a large quite extensive book on this subject. ...Dave
  6. I think I might be doing a lot of the type of work you are talking about. The best way for me to show you them is to direct you to my web site. If you have any questions about any particular one, get back to me and I'll try to answer them. www.andersonleather.com
  7. When I do round edge braiding I do it like the top of grant's plate 120 ...and just continue like there is no corner. I don't think you can go through a hole twice with round rdge braiding ...like you can with the Spanish edge lacing. Sometimes I'll indent that corner hole to make it a bit rounded. ...Dave
  8. Hey shadowryder... I've done quite a number of these over the (40) years. I mostly use 4 ounce moccasin cowhide ...I have used garment cowhide. Maybe you could take a look at my work and see if you might then have any further questions about how I go about it. http://www.andersonleather.com/motorcycle_leathers.html ...Dave
  9. Two holes must be added for each pleat - evenly spacing them has worked for me. ...Dave
  10. I think I understand what you are speaking about. I've used pleats when there was too much to gather ...go through three holes to form a pleat. ...Dave
  11. braided motorcycle levers how to braid motorcycle levers - In the book: Grant, Bruce. Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding. Cambridge, MD: Cornell Maritime Press, Inc., 1972. Around the levers was done with a 'Two-Bight Turk's-head of Any Length' on pages 376-77 - Plate 154. The knot used to finish the ends is a 'Two-Thong Turk's-head Button' on pages 274-5 - Plate 109 This is how I've been doing them for many years - it's done with a single strand of leather - it's two ends hanging. My request would be to see pictures of other folks' lever/s braiding posted here. ...Dave
  12. Greetings... I'm Dave Anderson of http://www.andersonleather.com/ While I thank the 'David' for the plug, I'd like to point out that "David' is not me trying to plug my site.
  13. Hi Heather... While I have done lots of braiding - I haven't used much rawhide at all - I also don't build tack. What I do know is that you can start braiding with an 8 strand flat braid and then continue it into two 4 strand round braids. That may be another way of doing it rather than flattening a round braid. ...Dave
  14. I'm under the impression that F5 is just a refresh/reload. Ctrl + F5 is the forced refresh. ...Dave
  15. I'd say it is the long way of making an eight strand braid. There are different ways to braid eight strands. Probably obviously, you should of used either a smaller core, wider strands, or eight strands for the braid. ...Dave
  16. I call that handbag one of my 'double flap' bags. I've built them in several sizes and on different types of bags. This one has no gusset and is pleated on the bottom of it. I get near $200 for it. Yes, a person could use lighter weight lace to build bags with. There is another topic in this 'Braiding' section that I started that has more pictures of my work in it. It's title is 'Greetings from a leather braider'. Here is a link to it: http://www.leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=5 Thanks for the compliments, ...Dave
  17. I just thought I'd add these details about Grant's books. Grant, Bruce. Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding. Cambridge, MD: Cornell Maritime Press, Inc., 1972. Grant, Bruce. How to Make Cowboy Horse Gear. Cambridge, MD: Cornell Maritime Press, Inc., 1953. Grant, Bruce. Leather Braiding. Cambridge, MD: Cornell Maritime Press, Inc., 1950.
  18. Here's a new bag style I recently came up. This braided leather shoulder bag is 100% leather. It has no hardware, lining, zippers, etc. - not even any thread. And, of course, it's truely hand made - no electric was used to build it.
  19. I'd say it's pretty much all duplicated in the 'Encyclopedia...'. ...Dave
  20. I've used one of these lace cutters quite extensively so I'm going to add a couple of tips that I've learned about them. I only use 1/4" laces for my work. Because of that I've filed the narrower slots larger - so I can use more of a single blade for 1/4" laces. Something else that I've done, to make those slots a bit smaller again, is wrap some thread around a slot. Most often I use a Jerry's Stripper to cut laces. After doing that, I take the outside two uneven laces and run them through this lace cutter. Sometimes I take a hammer and flatten the lace point out a bit to get it through this single lace cutter. I hope this info is of use. ...Dave
  21. Here'a a braided leather bag, that I finished not so long ago, that I like. It's built with moccasin cowhide and measures about 20" x 12" x 6".

    Pineapple knots

Hi Patrice... My apologies for not responding to your post earlier. To build a knot large enough to cover a large object you increase the parts and/or bights (scallops) to the knot. The knot in the picture you referred to has 12 bights and 15 parts. If you're familiar with Bruce Grant's 'Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding' book he describes how to do this on pages 134-136, Plates 50-51.
  23. Excuse me for being a bit off topic here, but, it does seem like the topic for me to express my glee. My domain name is andersonleather.com. It took me many years to pass up Pam Anderson and Peta in searches for 'Anderson leather' on most every search engine. I believe 'Pam Anderson' is still the most search term ever on the www, but, she probably doesn't take the 'yearly' title anymore. ...Dave

troy... Congrats about the pineapple knot! I'm delighted that you find inspiration in my work. ...Dave
  25. I cannot understand how anybody can suggest or defend using those archaic hook and eye needles. In my opinion, the threaded needles are better in every way. They are faster, more secure, easier to work with, and last longer. I file them to a point of my chosing and subsequently have no need for a fid. ...Dave
