  1. Hello, I have a leather store near by that specializes in leather boots, saddles, etc.... They have a box of leather scraps at 4.99 a lb. These have some sort of paint or other material on the inner side of the leather. I make knives and make the sheaths for them. I was wondering what this backing material it is and if it is good to work with for sheaths and rifle butt covers. Thanks!
  2. Awesome work. I like the Aztec knife symbol Tepactl I think thats the way its spelled or is it Iztli the god of Obsidian knife. I guess cause I am a knifemaker that symbol really apeals to me.
  3. Rayban my friend that is exactly what I was hoping to find. Thanks again!
  4. Thanks for the response guys. I can understand what you guys advise. I am just not sure what thickness of leather and how the end piece and wrap around piece get stitched together. I will keep on researching though. Thanks for the pics! -frank
  5. I just bought a Marlin 336 / 30-30. I was on a Marlin owners forum and there is a gentleman there that makes some outstanding looking butt covers. I am a knifemaker and have made a couple dozen knife sheaths. The last 4 or five I kind of knew what I was doing. I would really like to try and make a butt cover for my new rifle. Any help or direction would be appreciated. Thanks. -frank

Hey rayban, thanks for the welcome and tips. The first few unsucessfull attemps are what made me think of putting that rivet there. I have seen some amazing work here and I am looking forward to learning. Got me a dvd on the way and saving up my pennies for the book you recommended.

Hello, My name is Frank and I am from Deep South Texas. I am a IT Project Manager by profession and a part time knifemaker, and very new to working with leather. I have been practicing on some leather I purchased in Mexico this past December. I have made two sheaths that are far from perfect, acually not even close to perfect. The one in the pic is my best attempt to date. I look forward to reading and learning more on this great site. Thanks. -frank
