  1. Hey everyone

I'm currently following Bob Park's method on edge burnishing, though I sometimes torture myself with doing the sandpaper method (100 grit all the way to 2000 grit) to get an amazing edge on belts.

I recently came across this video, and the tool being used at 2:07 and 3:42 and 4:12 is something I've never seen before. He appears to use it before stitching and after stitching; before the edges are painted or sanded, as well as after painting the edge. I would assume the tool is heated up.

I'm looking for way to do edges like this, assumably with a wax of some sort, as sandpaper and Bob Park's method don't work too well for thinner leathers like those seen in the video.

Can anyone shed some light on this, or a similar way to do edges like this with wax? Information on what wax and/or tools to use would also be appreciated!

Hi I am a person that can do edges like what peter was doing. I make and sell a burnisher that can be used on a dremel tool that can get edges lie this. I have had Bob Park use my tools and does like the effect it can get. Go to my website and look at the short video that I have there demostrating the use of my tool. www.leathertools4u.com. as for the wax, I use paraffin wax. I also use sand paper to get my edge smooth.

  2. Leatherman, i'd be interested in one of your burnishers with the "nipple" if it was made for a dremel rather than a drill press. ideally I would be using this burnisher for eyelets and tight areas. Also I'm interested in a dremel burnisher that can easily accomodate canvas, currently I'm wrapping strips of canvas and duct taping the ends to a dremel burnisher. Please let me know if you can make this custom dremel burnishers...

I do make one like that. It is the cone shaped burnisher in the set. I do sell it on my website as a stand alone item as all of the other items.I sell it for 19.99 + 2.99 shipping checkout my web site www.leathertools4u.com

  3. Hi everyone. been awhile. Been busy making burnishers for tradeshows so I have not been able to post for awhile.

I make busnishers for leatherworkers. I make them to fit into a dremel or for drill presses and bench grinders. I try to cover all the bases and am always coming up with new tools. I make these here in Santa Fe New Mexico where I live. Since I am a one man operation I can only make so many to sell but do keep up. Here is a description of them

The first set is a 5 piece set made for a dremel tool . It has a 1/8" shaft made to fit standard collets in a dremel or rotary tool. I have made 4 burnishers and a stand for this set.this is what is in the set.

    1) 1/2" cove burnisher

    2) 1/4" cove burnisher

    3) 1/8" cove burnisher

    4) cone burnisher

    5) hardwood stand

Cove burnishers are made to handle leather from 2 oz to 10 oz with eze. The cone burnishers was developed to get into those tight places and belt slots and filgree work.

The second picture shows the drill press and bench grinder burnishers. The drill press burnisher has 4 grooves from 1/2" to 1/8" and a nipple on the end. it is 6" total length.

The bench grinder burnisher is 1 3/4" X 1 3/4" and also has 4 grooves ranging from 1/2" to 1/8"

All of the tools are made from cocobolo. Dalgerbia Retusa. comes from Central America. Coveted by leatherworkers because of it's durability and natural beauty

Also for it's natural oils in the wood.

The price for the 5 pc. set is 64.99 + 5.99 for shipping world wide. I ship first class mail and first class mail international. it totals 70.98 for the set

The drill press burnishers and the bench grinder sells for 49.99 + 5.99 shipping . For a total of 55.98 anywhere in the worrld.

Please visit my website for more items That I make. I can invoice you from paypal. or you can order from my website or call me (505)690-5929

I do accept all major credit cards and can take orders over the phone.

  4. Looking for Christmas prestent for a leather worker? Look no futher. This is a set of burnishers that i have developed for a dremel type of rotary tool that can handle a 1/8" shaft. There are 4 burnishers and a stand that makes up this set. I use any hardwood i can find for the stands . I am using Alder for the time being. The buenishers are made out of ccbolo. considered one of the most beautiful woods in the world. It is loved by leatherworkers because of the natural oils in the wood. I made these tools because I know how much trouble it is to burnish the edge of a leather project. These burnishers can make the job easy and fun to do.

The burnishers are made to doa certain job and here is a description of what they can do.

    1) Single groove burnisher that can do leather from 3 oz to 11 oz.

    2) Double groove burnisher that can do leather from 2 0z to 6 oz

    3) Flat faced burnisher for doing wide areas like the welt on gunrigs or skirts on saddles

    4) Cone shaped burnisher that is great for getting into tight spaces and filegree work

    5) Stand made to hold all of the burnishers.

I have these sets in some stores here in the USA and retail for $64.99 I can put 4 letters on the stand if you want. You need to contact me for the letters. They are branded into the leather with mini branding irons that I have

If you want a set please contact me at leatherman1457@aol.com

  5. Yes, you missed one of the best shows I have been to in years. A lot of people did a lot of hard work to make it a very good show.

    Randy

Randy Did I get to meet you at the show. I was one of the venders selling burnishers for the dremel tools. Here is a picture of them to help you see what I am talking about.

It was a great show and had a blast there. entered three pieces in the open division and one 2 first places and a second place. Ate some great food and l;istened to great music. It was overall a very postive experiance. Hope to do it again soon. Gary Lyon

  6. Hi guys

I use very thick veg tan leather for my belts (14 oz). I simply use a straight edge and a knife to cut the straps.

It "kinda works", but it's a real pain. I own this strap cutter but its just impossible to cut leather that thick.

I have seen strap cutters on ebay germany, like this one:

    http://www.ebay.de/i...665544420422217

Do you think this would work?

How do you use this tool? Just pulling like the other ones?

    cheers

    Schpacko

Schpacko. I use a tool that cuts any weight of leather with ease. I stumbled upon this tool while trying to cut some 12 oz leather and had a hard time getting a straight edge until the ideal light bulb came on and I used my 60" matt cutter. I also picture frame so I have a 60" matt cutter . with a new blade and If the leather is 60" of less in width or length ,it will cut it like butter with a hot knife no matter the thichness. try it ,it does work. now i use it to cut my edge straight and to cut the strips. works like a charm. ~~~~~~Gary

  10. Could not think of a better topic to put into the saddle section gallery.

I make leather tools and have made a bouncer and mini bouncer for a saddle maker in the mid west. The customer ordered a set of bouncers that I make. One is a regular size bouncer and the other is a mini bouncer. I have inlayed a brass concho with the customers initals. M.H. I hope he likes it because he has not seen it yet. just emailed him.

If you are intrested in a bouncer or a set I can make them for you and I think you will love the quality of work that I do. The large bouncer I sell for $70.00 and the small is $45.00. I charge $5.00 extra for putting you initals on the tools. If you do not want your initals I put my name as a maker mark. The wood is cocobolo with solid brass ferrules and porcelain heads. PM me if you want one or two or even three. l

  12. Gary,

I turned a couple of burnishers this past weekend out of walnut. The first one I turned first and then drilled the hole thru the tailstock of the lathe. The second one I drilled the hole in the stock, put a dowel in the hole with a couple turns of masking tape to keep it from spinning around the dowel and then turned the burnisher. I drilled the hole in both about 3/4 the length of the burnisher. When I chucked them up in the drill press they both kinda wobbled.

Got any tips on how to make a burnisher that will turn true???

    Thanks,

    JD

JD I use a 1/4' steel rod cut 4" long. i find the center of my piece of wood and cut an x with my band saw . I drill out the center of the X with a 15/32 drill bit 3" deep. I do not use epoxy because i drill it just a tad small for the 1/4" rod.I then set it on the bench and with a sledge or hammer I pound it into the drilled out hole. If you want use some superglue gel. just a drop will do. I seat the rod and I place it on my lathe. I use a m1 3 jaw chuck and a live center chuck. I then turn my piece of wood on the side that i am puttig my ferrule on. I make my own ferrules out of compression fittings and turn them with a file on slow speed till i have filed it smooth I have 4 chisels That I use. I have made them the size I need to make my burnishers with. Once i have turned it I then use my cut off and almost cut thru it. I sand it and wax it on the lathe at high speed. I then cut thru and see if it wobbles if so i take it out of the lathe and see what side it is off on and place the metal rod in and bend it ever so slightly. I chuck it up again and turn it by hand to see if it is off. I so i repeat it again if not I turn the lathe on, on slow speed and with sand paper clean up the end. I then begin the finishing sanding . It is time consuming but well worth it. I do most out of cocobolo or bubinga wood now. If you have any more questions contact me. and I will explain more. Gary

  13. I think I might have got it down ,finally. I have made three burnishers today. one was for a customer. strange how money will motivate a person. lol. I have got two left for sale. i will let them go for $30.00 each and that include shipping. first come first serve. They are made of cocobolo and one has a 1/4"shaft with solid brass ferrule and the other has a 5/16" shaft and it also has a solid brass ferrule. I have cocobolo wood on order. I was suppose toi get some this last weekend but the stuff the guy had was only 3/4" and to small for what i need . I will list it when the wood comes in. 14. Justwakin. i have used powdered dyes on leather. I used a stiff brush to pounce the powder dyes into the leather and then use a spray sealer so that they would not come off. It makes for a very subtle color almost like water colors that have been washed or pastels. It does work ,don't get discourged. I have tried almost every thing to see if it works and i will be darned that it works almost every time.

as for smoking leather ,the Native Americans have been doing it for thousands of years. it is part of the brain tan process to water proof the clothes. they would brain tan lets say an deer skin and then they would hang it after the brain tan process inside the top of the teepee or would wrap it around a frame and smoke it . It comes out very nice . the only problem Is that when I work with brain tan I get hungery for BBQ.Don't let anyone discourge you from trying something. It might not work but at least you tried it and can now say it did not or it did work. Keep up the good work and have fun with leather. Gary
