  2. Thank you Renee, yes all my work is done by hand. I had to many problems with machines and I like the fact that I can get the stitches deep into the leather and people are more drawn to handmade items from what I have experienced. Have you seen my other designs? Hope you continue to enjoy my work, I enjoy yours as well.

Wow, really well done! I am always drawn to the handmade items.

I was up your way today at Tandy for an emergency leather run lol. Yes, I have seen some of your bag designs as well. Awesome!

  3. Yes, you want vegetable tanned/tooling leather. The pre-dyed stuff usually already has a finish on it that doesn't allow the water to penetrate the leather.

The boiling method is one way to stiffen leather and depending on what you are doing, you may not need to do all that as far as boiling and then baking in the oven. For some sheaths, armor, and holsters that may be necessary (not sure really). The term to search is called cuir boulli.

One thing to be mindful of if you use the cuir boulli methond is the wax. Remember you can not dye over the wax.

Many make wet molded items just by wetting the leather completely and using things like a bone folder, or even vac seal bags to form their items. Just air drying without the oven seems to get the leather pretty stiff and hold its shape.

  4. My first attempt at a toolbag, I did exactly as Cyber has suggested. I went to the farmer's market and picked up a crappy faux leather one to rip apart for a pattern. Worked pretty well.

I also just went to Tandy last week and picked up their motorcycle pattern pack. It included a few bag patterns such as a toolbag, a sissy bar bag, and a saddle bag. There was one more in the pack but I forget off hand.

My only problem with a pattern is that you usually have to adjust a million things to make them work for you and your bike. So a pattern for those is more of a base line as how to construct, an idea of layouts etc..

  5. I have the paasche vl and LOVE it! My first airbrush was from harbor freight and it didn't do so well for me. I actually think I got one with a bent needle, but I didn't know any better :) The paasche vl came with 3 needles, the #1,#3, and #5. When it arrived it had the #3 already installed and I haven't changed it since lol. I am really bad at detailing with the airbrush, but I bought it mainly for finishing. The #3 works great for finishes. However, if you are into detailing then you are set because you already have the other needles to work with as well.

Jack, I just checked out your FB page and I have to tell you those holsters are bad a**! Wow.

  6. I don't have a machine strong enough to sew leather that thick and I don't know what yours is, but it might be as silly as can you turn it over or does your machine have a flat base?

Also, my suggestion for attaching a loop after it is constructed like that, you can use rivets to secure the belt loop. http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/search/searchresults/8105-00.aspx

Slide the flat side of the cap tool inside the phone case, lay a scrap piece of leather on top so you can punch the holes, and then use the same idea to set the rivets.

    I hope I explained that ok :)

  7. LOL Bob, I agree. I pretty much do the same by finding the center and starting there. The "i" is a pita. Especially for my last as I showed previously. Indianapolis was my last messed up word. 3 of those suckers in there. Thankfully I was able to use the "1" from my number set as a place holder.
