I am now the Southernmost provider of Herman Oak Leather in the USA. Just got the new shipment in. Cant wait to test drive it.

We got cowboys, we got bikers, pirates and other Renn men, We got hippies and gun and knife fansWe got vagabonds, rockers and a few that cant be mentioonedI aint talking about a bar either. Even though I keep a bottle around for medicinal purpose. Its a day in the life of an artisan style leather store. I never knew how many facets of life come together in this wonderful world of leather.

Well today is the first day back at work. Had a great time in Albaquerque NM. Saw a bunch of old friends, and met a whole bunch of new ones. The show was fantastic and the hospitality was even better. Cant wait to see you all again in Nashville next year.

A customer of mine told me about this and I have been trying it out with good results. Its called Createx acrylic air brush paint. You use it out of the bottle and Its water based (easier to clean and safer) Its available in art stores or online in a bunch of places. I did this band with it and it came out OK. It was a rush job no tooling or anything just painted and thats it.

Thanks guys, it really is something else. He said it was a nightmare at the DMV especially since it was all handbuilt. He had to show receipts for the frame tubing etc. The motor was also a pain since its about 60 years old with no numbers. All I know is when he walked into my store with that giant seat pan I knew I was goona make the seat no matter what.

I dont post much but I wanted to share these pics. with you guys. Not because of the banana seat I made for the bike but because I think this is one really unique build. A buddy of mine built the entire thing from the ground up. It has an old Flathead Ford V8 motor, I love the Model T radiator. I mean this thing is just beautiful. It is ridden daily its not a trailer queen either. When I asked him what was the hardest part of the build he said it was getting it titled. Thanks

This Sunday we will be taking our store on the road. We will be set up at La Perla Ranch for a horse event. 18900 sw 136 street. Weve been there before and can say it is a great party. Runs from noon to Midnight so if youre in the area stop by and say hello.

I know exactly how you feel. I get myself into all sorts of trouble betting I can do it. Then Im cussing and moaning thru the entire process. But I wouldnt have it any other way. -
I know what you mean. Its hard all over. But we have to keep at it. If I give out 100 cards and get one customer Im happy. For event demos I prefer to just carve, I have a stamping stick I made from aluminum pipe that makes a lot of noise and I can chum them right in. Heres another idea I have been doing now with good outcome, make leather feathers. You need very little tools, you can make one in a few minutes that way you dont bore them, wrap a piece of wire around them and hit them with sheen spray. Then sell it to them for 5 or ten bucks. And at the same time you become a monster making them. We just have to keep doing what we can. I hate cliches but with lemons we make lemonade or maybe coctails for the adults.

Anytime anyone offers you to set up in their parking lot and its in a high traffic area you should jump on it. Get as close to the road as possible to pull the cars in. Since my store is in a ware house area I have to do a lot of this to get people to know I exist. I also invested in wrapping my van and making it a rolling billboard. I can park on the side of the road bring out a couple saddles and people start pulling over almost instantly. I would rather have a lot of very nice show pieces to show off my work then inventory. Especially if you are getting the spot comp. (no cost to recover) Set yourself a work area for demos, its incredible how this brings people in to talk to you and you can educate them on how its made. You can give out cards and flyers and will get more custom orders that way. Then when there is no custom orders on the board you concentrate on making inventory. Hopefully there will be no time for inventory stuff and you will have a waiting list for the custom orders. But you will still have to do all the marketting and getting out there cause people forget quickly and lose your cards. So you have to keep it up. Good Luck

They are getting ready to wrap up filming a 1980s rock and roll movie called Rock of Ages down here. Cant go into the details until after the release but I was hired to do the custom leather for it. Was a big detour from what I usually make but I had a lot of fun doing it. Now I cant wait to see it on the screen in July 2012.
