  1. Can anyone tell me what the feed dog height above the plate should be, please?  I can't find my user's manual at the moment.

Also, does anyone know where I can download a copy of the user's manual?  Solar Leather, which is now out of business, used to have a download but I can't find one anywhere at the moment.

  2. If I want to make a tooled and stamped belt I need to use regular "unmolested" veg tan, correct?  If I want to soften it up after it has been tooled and stained, what's the best way to do that?

But, if I want to make just a regular belt with no tooling, would bridle leather be the proper choice?

You can find that exact info in Stohlmans series on making leather cases. available in print and digital download. you'll find the actual thing you're talking about in VOLUME 2 but I'd recommend getting volume 1 just for the basic principles it shows.  It would take you a year of wading through the stuff around here to get just what's in 10 pages of either of those books.

Alternately, if you already know holsters 'n' other 'smaller stuff", then might be just as easy spend the money for the pattern somebody already made

While those Stohlman books are so old as to look like something silly, they do indeed have so much useful information in them that they are invaluable.

Are any of their pre-cut straps thin enough to be used as a lining? you wouldnt want to end up with a 6mm thick belt...

I can't remember the exact thickness, but last time I worked with a Tandy strap it appeared to be about 7-8 oz leather.

For a heavy duty belt that would be good for carrying a gun, I was thinking about two layers of 7-8 oz glued and stitched together.
