Chocolate pro dye gets almost black!  I have had similar problems with rub off and color problems with black,  I just won’t use black because of all the problems associated with it.  I use clear lac from panhandle leather, never had any problems with it.  I thinks it’s the black dye that’s the problem.

Appreciate your feedback! The black dye sounds like it could definitely be the issue.

If you don’t mind me asking, do you thin the Clear Lac with anything or use full-strength?

    Thanks again,

I have been using Clearlac ever since Tandy removed Neatlac and have never had a problem with it subduing color.. I have to  admit I never use black, too many problems associated.  If you will try Fiebings "Cordovan dye" 99 out of 100 people can't tell it is not black, and you don't have the problems normally associated with black.  I have never tried thinning, can't tell you about that.

    Hope this helps

Thanks so much, Terry. I will definitely look into the Cordovan. Sounds like it could be a good alternative.

    Thanks again!

  3. Hello good people, I recently purchased LCi Clear Lac from Panhandle Leather, and was hoping for some guidance on the best way to apply it. I’ve used the search function, but can’t seem to find an answer directly related to the issue I’m having. (Though admittedly I have probably not done enough browsing).

I was hoping to use the Clear Lac as my topcoat finish; however, I haven’t been getting the best results. I am using 9-10oz Hermann Oak for belts dyed black with Fiebings Pro Dye. When applied full strength, the Clear Lac seems to heavily fade the color black (Which is quite the opposite for what I was hoping for - I picked up the Clear Lac after reading about its ability to add a heavy gloss to the final project). I have also thinned down the Clear Lac, using a very basic lacquer thinner from the local hardware store. (Roughly 3 parts Clear Lac/1 part Thinner). This resulted in (what I think) is the lacquer thinner picking up portions of the dye: There are literally parts of the strap that are entirely faded to grey.

Anyhow, I know this is all very likely human error, and was hoping to possibly get some feedback from anyone currently using LCi’s Clear Lac.

    Thanks so much,

  4. Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has used "Weaver Clear Leather Sealer" from Weaver Leather. States that it "...Imparts a high gloss, waterproof protective coating"

I am looking for a glossier finish on my products, and this seems to be pretty affordable. Was hoping to get some input, though it does look like it's listed as a new product.

    Thank you all for everything!

  5. Hello guys/gals,

The projects that I have been working on lately have left me with an abundance of Female Line 24 snaps (Cap,Socket).

I was hoping you good people could point me in the right direction of a site that sells 5/16' Male Line 24 Snaps, or simply the stud and eyelet separately. I am looking for these in a Gold color, and would like to purchase around 200-300 of each.

As always, thank you kindly for your time!

"Vintage"? The stamps you listed are still available from Tandy. Am I missing something?

My apologies, I definitely was not clear on this! Hahaha!

I am looking for the older Craftool versions of these particular stamps...Particularly ones made between 1963 - and even into the 70s, 80s. Ones labeled "Craftool Co." followed by just a 2 or 3 digit number, or "Craftool Co." followed by a letter prefix and number. As well as those labeled "Craftool Co. USA" followed by a prefix and number.

  7. NVLeatherWorx...Thank you for such an informative reply! I had a suspicion the area tooled next to the snaps was done by a press, but didn't even think about the entire belt itself being pressed. The fact that these belts are churned out in numbers and ALL look exactly alike makes me think they are not hand-tooled, and further lends credit to your observation of the use of a press. Good eye, sir! And thanks again for your reply!

    Regards,

    SH

  8. Hey guys and gals,

I was wondering if anyone might be familiar with the border stamp used on this championship belt. I have searched around Craftool, Barry King, and some other makers, but cannot seem to find it. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you all for what you do!

  9. Thank you all kindly for your answers. It is for a championship belt; just a one-time thing.

Unfortunately I don’t have access to a press or embossing role; so I may have to look into getting a custom stamp made. One individual I spoke with who did a similar pattern had to tool the pebbling individually, so looks like this one might be a bit of a challenge!

Thanks again everyone for your time! I appreciate it so much.

  10. Hello good people,

I was wondering if any of you guys and gals might know of a stamp similar to the one in the attached picture? Not sure if it’s an “X”-style geometric stamp or the diamond stamp I would need. Needing to do a row of these for a belt

If anyone may be able to point me in the right direction, I’d be forever grateful.

Thanks and have a great weekend!G3cfkRi.jpg

I'm also in Bossier, I plan on making a trip through that way this summer heading to see the folks in MO, I wouldn't mind carving out some space and meeting up along hwy65.

Koreric...that’d be awesome! I’m in Fayetteville, so I could meet you somewhere like Harrison maybe? Shoot me a message when you head up this way! Thank you!

I'm in Bossier City. I have some oval vanity cut outs and some that are roughly 20 x 30. If you make the trip you can have more than one.

Biker, thanks brother! If I’m down that way, I will absolutely give you a shout!

Steve, are you just using a beveler? How thick is your leather?

Hey Stetson! Yessir just the beveler. Using 8-9oz leather.

What you're seeing there is called a beveling ridge.  This one is done well and smoothly and it makes a nice 3D feature in the carving.  The type of beveler makes all the difference.  This looks like a standard beveler from Tandy (No idea about the number, sorry), but you can achieve this effect with a steep beveler from Barry or any of the other makers.  I t will be easier with a larger beveler so that you minimize tool marks.  Its possible its been done with a push beveler, but I don't have one of those, so I can't say for certain.  The leather does not need to be excessively thick.  This could easily be done in 6 oz leather with the right combination of tool/leather.

Thank you so much immiketoo! I am absolutely going to look at some steep bevelers. I picked up a tool at Springfield the other day, “Craft Japan F896” which I think could help. Haven’t had the chance to use it yet, but we shall see.

    Thank you all again!

  13. Hello guys/gals,

I am trying to achieve the raised effect as seen and highlighted in the picture attached. No matter how much I bevel and bevel, I cannot seem to achieve anywhere near this result. I know a lot of this can be attributed to my sub-par beveling skills, but I thought I could at least achieve something close to the picture.

Any ideas/tips to help achieve this sort of raised look?

Thank you all so much for input.

  14. Hello, I was wondering if any of you great guys/gals may be able to point me in the right direction of how this particular tooling is achieved. Is this done using a particular stamp?

    Thank you as always!

(The stamping/tooling in question is done inside next to where the snaps are located)
