  1. Makoa means "Fearless" in Hawaiian. My fiance and I came up with it. Although we have never been we are getting married in Hawaii next year. As far as fearless well I am a huge Pink Floyd fan and Fearless is one amazing song and a bit of a motto...

You say the hill's too steep to climb

    Climb it

You say you'd like to see me try

    Climbing

You pick the place and I'll choose the time

And I'll climb the hill in my own way

Just wait a while for the right day

And as I rise above the tree lines and the clouds

I look down Hear the sound of the things you said today

Fearlessly, the idiot faced the crowd smiling

Merciless, the magistrate turns 'round, frowning

And who's the fool who wears the crown?

And no doubt in your own way

And every day is the right day

And as you rise above the fear-lines in his brow

You look down and hear the sound of the faces in the crowd

    (You'll never walk alone...)

And so Makoa Custom Leather was born.

  2. Thanks all for the compliments.

That looks great! Did you handstitch it? That must've taken a while!!

Spots, rivets and chicago screws? Are they gilt or solid brass?

    Thank you.

Yes this was my first Hand Stitched.

    Everything was solid brass.

Great job. Very well done. When hand stitching, use harness needles, available in several sizes. They have a blunt point for pre-punched holes. Use the smallest one your thread will fit through the eye of. Only one suggestion; Finish the edges on the narrower strap before sewing it onto the wider one. Besides that, everything looks great.

Thanks, where would you get harness needles? I wounder how similar they are to the tapestry needles I have...?

Yes I need to invest in a burnisher for my edging. I also forgot to use my gum trag before I finished it.

Was working on it for a few days to get the stitching right... Wow loads of work with no stitching pony. Finally got er done after about 3 types of needles later.

What do people here use for pre-punched leather projects? I settled on tapestry needles I liked how the ends were rounded.

    Thanks, Mike.

  4. Ruthless welcome. I'm a fellow Pittie/Dog lover and volunteer quite a lot of time to bull-breed rescue.

I have recently started to do custom dog collars to sell. Its a real trial and error experience I have gone through a few different options; when working with tooled leather I like to use Eco Flo Hi-lite, neatsfoot oil and a wax topcoat(I have been using Snow-Seal for its waterproofing quality).

For dyes I use Fiebings, let it dry overnight, deglazer(Nail pollish remover) and then neatsfoot oil, Carnauba creme for the front and Gum Tragacanthfir the back and edges.

As far as pre-dyed leather it limits you to only a few options and cost is always more. I am always a fan of doing things myself whenever possible. Anthing he can do I can do too, or atleast try.

  5. That's Pretty sweet! I really like that Font. "Toad" and the skateboard made me think of the Toadies ( a band). Now I can't get "Possum Kingdom" out of my head  Not saying that is a bad thing though :)

Yeah it is a dog collar for friends. They have a sweet little pittie girl who I love to death. Her prefered way of sleeping is frog leg style hence "Toad". Toadies will be googled. along with Possum Kingdom??

    Good looking belt!!!

    Tom

Thanks Tom though its a collar but I can see how you would get it confused. Same Sh*t diff pile.

    Mike.
