  1. Hello, For a leather like this: https://www.oaleathersupply.com/collections/conceria-walpier-buttero/products/conceria-walpier-buttero-navy Would I be able to case it to stamp it? It's veg tan (I get you can't case chrome tanned leather to stamp); how else can you tell if you can case and stamp it for leathers finished like this? Thank you JMAK
  2. Perfect - sounds like I got to pick this up now! thanks - should have some blue painters tape to put in the leather kit! now to try some dyeing and stamping tests
  3. Hello - I've read that for tooling/stamping (to prevent stretching), and even dyeing (to prevent shrink) one can mount to cardboard (not corrugate) or other firm surface using contact cement. What I can't seem to find clarity on is do you apply the contact cement and let dry to both the mounting service and the leather? I suspect yes, and will test, but wanted some experience from the forum to help me out. if you do use on both surfances, how do you remove the contact cement residue off the back of the leather? Thank you JMAK74
  4. Thank you! appreciate the reply and info
  5. no, it's two different pieces (the image on the right/brown leather is the front, the image on the left is the back)... sorry for the confusion. what gets me is the resulting difference, so i can only think it's the leather
  6. Hello! Tried searching here and nothing came up, so I'll ask! I should be getting my order from OA Leather Supply this week and I'll be getting some thread by Black Crown in it. I ordered some #277/0.8mm thread (per website). Checking further on the internet - seems that #277 thread could be closer to 0.66mm. That's not an issue for me, however is there a standard system when it comes to the #277, #138, #92 numbering system vs. say other systems like 532, 432, etc one might see with MBT and with other poly threads? Thank you JMAK
  7. Hello, Been practising my hand/saddle stitching and it seems to be coming along. watched Neil Armitage's, Ian Atkinsons, JH Leather and others several times, always looking for more to watch and learn from. Maybe I will get Al's book too. One thing that I"m trying to understand is does the leather type affect the stitch? I think the answer is yes, but... I'm using KS Blade 3.85mm with 0.6mm Ritza Tiger. Leathers are both 3mm total thickness (two 1.5mm glued together). Difference is the leathers - veg tan on the left is from Tandy and the brown leather is that Wanderings leather you can get three sheets of off Amazon (newbie move on my part...). When I look at the stitches and how they have laid out, the one on the brown leather looks what I wanted while the one on veg, not so much. I did the same technique from what i can tell, same cast, etc on both, yet two different looks. is it solely the leather? should I get a different sized thread (thicker, thinner)? any help would be appreciated here. Thank you!

    Hello!

always enjoyed making things with my hands (woodworking, military model building, etc.) and was looking to try something new, so here I am! I'm eager to learn (right now I'd say main interest is small leather goods), got some tools and such, been practicing my hand stitching. It's time to get making. I'll post my questions in the appropriate sections as they come up! Thank you JMAK
