Hi folks, I found myself with some free time and can’t really say why but I caught this bug to work with exotic leathers. We just finished a new section of our house and I’d like to do something special for the den area. I'm thinking of wrapping or trimming a flatscreen TV frame in some type of exotic leather - either ostrich, lizard, alligator or python to give you a better idea. My brother happens to own a TV store in Arizona so luckily I’ll have a few TVs to learn on which I am sure I will need! I may also at some point do some other projects with the skins, but for now the TV is just something I’d like to focus on.. Any ideas or suggestions for what sewing machine I should buy? Again, I see myself likely doing more projects in the future with exotic skins - so buying a sewing machine that costs more than it would to have it made by a pro is a nonissue. My concerns are that I’ve never seen something like this before and sewing on a TV obviously near the screen and on top of the plastic… I imagine I would use a layer of cowhide under the exotics. Hoping to get some good advice from the fine experts on this forum and anyone else who wants to chime in. Tell me what you think.. thanks ya'll Buck

A customer has asked me to make him a wallet out of alligator skin. This will be my 1st time to work with alligator skin. I have purchased a nice grade of freshwater alligator skin for the build. Since alligator skin is somewhat thin, should i wrap the alligator skin around another piece of 1.4mm leather for added strength? I also usually work with thicker hides, like 2.4mm and therefore use a thick waxed thread when saddle stitching. For alligator skin what kind of thread would you recommend I use? Any other tips you can offer to help before I get to work on this build would be greatly appreciated. I'd hate to ruin a single inch of this stuff, it's expensive$$$! Thanks!

Hello, I am looking for someone who can repair zippers on a pool stick case that is made of alligator skin. It is my husband's and he has tried to get it repaired before, but with no luck. He has not found anyone with the skill to be able to take on the project. Please contact me if you are, or if you know of someone who is, a leatherworker who can work with exotic skins like alligator. I don't have a picture of the case currently, but can provide one if needed. Thanks!

I am going to make myself a new wallet and want to use this gator hide I just bought. I'd like to use the head area but it will go into the shoulder/leg area of the hide. I may need to use a flatter area, like behind the shoulder. It would make more waste in the long run. Do you think I can glue it flat. I have used rubber cement on a pound-o-board to line things up in the past but I don't know if it will last once it is permanently glued to the backing. What do you guys think. Any and all thoughts welcome. Thanks, Ken

Hello all, I have been working with some very nice leathers over the years, and now I am working some exotics into my line. Does anyone have a source for high quality alligator or crocodile in the US? Looking for a variety of colors particularly browns and tans. I don't mind buying from overseas, but I would much rather buy from the US. Price is not as big a concern as the quality and colors available. I am willing to pay a little more if the product is high quality. Any help or leads would be greatly appreciated! Cheers and thanks in advance, David

I have hundreds of skins of small/baby alligator or crocodile, I am not sure which. They were left over from an old project and I'm hoping someone can help me figure out exactly what I own and how much it is worth and where is the best outlet to sell them. I have 5 different colors. They vary in size but are all approx. 25" long and 2-3" at the widest part. Thanks!

Hello, We are new to this forum and are looking for someone in the Northwest Arkansas area to take our scrap leather and turn them into bi-fold wallets, etc. We have tons of ostrich, buffalo, and lamb hides available. Our hides are all cut down to our book binding size, and hides measure roughly 17" W x 13" H. We compensate for your time and skill. Thanks.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and just starting to try and learn some of the trade. There is so much more to it than I had imagined. I am a retired Naval Officer and recreational alligator hunter. I have some skins getting tanned now. Just 4- and one is from a monster fat 12 footer. I am trying to learn how to do much of the basics myself but what I'm also looking for is to see if anyone is interested in bartering Tanned Alligator (wild Florida alligator legally caught and tagged by me) for some belts, wallets and purses for my immediate family. If bartering isn't advantagous to you than I would like to find someone that will make them for a fair price from the hides I supply. I also have several other friends that are always looking for something to do with their hides. Please let me know if anyone is interested.
