I was moulding a leather for a saddle bags ( firs time), but it was to flat, so I didn't know what to do with this, and this happened A little dirty, cause of oiling and my little experience with painting that time. There is a place for a pocket knife and some hunting papers in a flap.

Hello everyone, ***I'm re-posting this due to losing all my photos being lost in the Photobucket ransom. I've had a few request to re-post*** Here are a few pics of my latest bag. It is a commission piece. Customer requested a bag that resembled the Louis Vuitton Greenwich Neo. The bag is made with Horween Natural Chromexcel. Fully hand sewn with beige fil au chinois linen thread (size 432 @ 6spi) There is a shoulder strap, strap to secure this bag to his rolling luggage, luggage tag, padlock with keys and clochette. Riri zipper, polished nickle hardware, cream canvas lining.

I have a customer who wants me to make him an “authentic” 1810 era Sequoyan carry bag. He is supplying the leather. He has sent a pretty detailed drawing of what he wants. No modern threads or machine sewing. All hand punched holes and rawhide lacing. It’s a pretty big bag, with gussets. I don’t have any real problems doing it, per se, but I have no idea of what a 19th century Indian bag would look like and Google has not been my friend. I have 2 questions, if anyone can answer either or both <g> 11) Do you think the stitching should be inside or just butting the edges together and whip stitching it. I doubt that the early Indians had saddle stitching or anything fancy, but I could be wrong. 2 2) How do I price something like this? Having never made one, I can’t even begin to know how long it will take..

Hey! So I've been having this problem with my bag flaps curling around after stitching. The weight of my leather is like a garment leather with a little stretch. I'm trying to make a bag flap for my sling bags and I do want the stitches to be around the edges. I'm getting that curling effect though. I know it's because the machine is pulling the thread tight and since the leather has a little stretch, that is what is causing it. So I guess I'm asking: What can I do about it? How can I make it appear less curled? Should I layer the flap with two layers of the leather? Should I do a double layer with a bag stiffener into the edges? Thanks in advance to anyone who has any ideas.

Made myself a new bag. It is hand sewn using yellow Somac 18/5, 3.85 mm stitch length. The leather is John Whites 4.5 mm sides, Sedgwick 3mm top , Dark Havana. The front and back is some kind of orthopedic leather, shaped around a wooden form. The strap goes around the bag once, to keep the top more rain proof, and I'm going to make a shoulder strap pad. The whole strap thing is temporary, and likely to be replaced. The bag is lined with some yellow/ green 'ish canvas furniture fabric. It's a good tip to choose a fabric color close to your thread, as it hides the stitches a little. > It's hard for a beginner like me to get good sticthes on this fabric, I think.. Edit: the buckles should have been roller type, I realize that now. Hope you like it:

So my wife had her birthday today and I made to items for her. For the last year she complained about the fact, that she didn't get a bag from me and why I was doing them for everyone else. I tried to argue that the other people paid for the bags, but she just dismissed that argument so today she finally got the bag and was thrilled... and I also did a belt she really liked. Both items is made of black veg tan leather, hand stitch and the bag got brown goat lining. I would love your opinion on the items, good day to you all.

I'm designing a large (around 40 by 30 by 7 cm) gusset bag from 2 mm vegetable tanned leather. I'm using a three-piece gusset design for added rigidity. I know from experience that large bags like these will eventually start to become rounded at the top as the bag starts to form around your body.I would like to prevent this as much as possible, keeping the box-like form as long as possible. The best solution I have thought of thus far is making the lid a separate piece and hiding a slat of 2 mm PP sheet inside the joint between the back piece and the lid. I wish I had some wooden blinds, I could steal one of the slats and use that. I also considered adding a small formed pocket on the inside, but this would make the narrow bag less practical. Any thoughs or recommendations?

Hello everyone, two years ago i lost my mom and she left me her bag. A bag that's in optimal condition and had 10 years of usage without a hitch. But ten years is ten years and the edges started cracking slightly. It was slight but iIwanted to stop it from going any further, so iIook it to a repair shop that substituted the hole edge on the handle as you can see from the pictures. I went to pick it up and the paint was all cracked iIdidn't even bother to leave iIshed them to redo it because it was in no condition. They applied a second layer that when iIpicked up cracked again on the hole. I asked if iIleft it there they could fix it they said they'd just apply more paint and assured me it would last more than the original edge (which lasted ten years mind you). I took the bag and left. Obviously parts of the paint started falling off. So here iIm desperate to somehow repair my bag and return it to its former glory and give it a few more years of usage and keep a part of my mom with me. If tthere's anyone out there that can help me iIold really appreciate it. pictures of the bag

I wasn't finding a topic on it already. But I had a question around bag and purse design that I was curious on. This centers on bags in particular that have a fold over flap, and not ones that zip or close at the top. Is there a reason why you would make the back and flap two separate pieces? The designs I've made myself have all kept the back and flap as one single piece. But I see many that are two. Is this just to accommodate using smaller cuts of leather? Thanks, Charlie

I figured I had to try one eventually, and my trophy wife indicated a desire for something small, cross-body, lightweight, that would carry her Ruger LCP, 3 cards, a bit of cash, and keys. Oh, and an i-Phone. Mission accomplished. It took a bit of design, re-design, re-re-design, to make it small and lightweight. In the picture, the front flap looks huge, it's actually the same width as the back of the bag. I'm thinking of tapering it after it makes the top bend. The additional sleeve is very thin, and will carry the cards and cash either in the bag itself, or in the rear pocket. The outer bag stitching got a little erratic on the back side. I didn't particularly like doing the corners on the gusset. I did this type of construction so I could try an inner and an outer join of the gusset to the bag. Basically taught myself as I went along. I did do a small practice corner for the front overlap corner. Good thing, it was a challenge. Okay, I took another picture of the bag, from an angle. It doesn't look at all like the picture above where the flap looks huge, it's actually not bad in person. The flap stays. The boss sez she likes it that way.

Question, I've seen many bags with fringe and the edge is braided or whip stitched all together. I'd like to know how this is done, so the fringe is facing front. I did a sample of how I think it's done but need your knowledge to be sure. So, I have the bags edge (if you will/sample) and glued the fringe in place "wrong side" to the back of the bag. I've braided all three together. The fringe is facing front and there are no unfinished edges - looks good....however, I'd like it to lay flater. A bit of wear and it will hang more relaxed...what's your opinion please & thank you so much in advance.

I had a leftover piece of this really beautiful oil-tanned i had bought for a specific project that I then decided against. So I made a dice bag. Brass eyelets, latigo drawstring, and a cord lock. 35+ standard dice capacity, and when properly cinched shut, it will hold dice even when upside-down. And I sold it! I've never sold anything I've made before. So I'm pretty pleased by that.

I'm curious as to what kind of leather would be recommended for garments and softer bags. Is lining leather appropriate or is it too thin? Being newer to leather work, where would one source such a leather? Tandy does seem to have a couple lining leathers and even milled veg but I'm not certain. I ask since most of the wallets i've made out of veg have been exceedingly stiff and the thought of making a bag that stiff is off-putting. I've seen some recommendations for using neatsfoot oil or carnauba cream to condition leather but does it soften it to be more pliable or just slightly so? Thanks in advance,

Has anyone ever tried lining a bag with Cordura? I'm looking at different options for a grey fabric/synthetic liner for a messenger style bag I'm making out of Chromexcel. I fear this would be too heavy of a liner, but thought it could be a pretty cool end result. If anyone has any thoughts, they would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, gg

I have been asked to make a bag with a gusset like the one in this photo, which has an internal divider. I'm looking for suggestions for securing the divider...

Hi everybody! Very few of you know this, but my dream is coming true and I am opening my first store on January 14th here in L.A. area called "The Leather Shop." That means that I have been MIA from the forum because I have been so busy building inventory. But here are just a handful of bags I have made for the opening and would love feedback if you have any. Enjoy and keep grinding and honing your craft. Whatever it takes! Another version

Hi, everyone!! This project is far from done, but I just wanted to share some progress. This is one of the pockets that will go on the side of a new camera bag I'm making. It is my first attempt at piping and inside sewing. I mafe the piping myself from the same leather I used in all the project. I'll share my process once I'm done with the rest of it (I have yet to make another four stripes: two for the other side pocket and two for the bag's main compartment. It's all coming together rather nicely, I tell you!!
