  1. Hello everyone! I am looking for some suggestions on a supplier to buy buckles, rings, D-rings, snaps and rivets for dog accessories here in Canada. I am based in Montreal and in the are the only one that I know is Cuir Desrocher. I've also looked up other store in different provinces like Lonsdale leather, Longview leather and some in the US like Buckle Guy. But my problem is that I didn't find the right design or the prices are high. Do you have any suggestion? Thank you!
  2. Hello leatherworkers, I am a young pianist and I have recently started learning to play my great-grandfather's accordion. While I am enjoying playing the accordion very much, the strap is worn at one end and I am worried it may snap. It's also very stretched out from much love over the years. I would like to have a new simple leather strap made in the same shape as this one, and can provide the original as a template. I have checked with various leatherworking businesses around me (Greater Vancouver/Fraser Valley area), but none of them do custom work. The one modification I would suggest for the new strap would be to make it about 1 cm shorter than the original (i.e. reduce the length of the middle portion by 1cm), to compensate for stretching the original has gone through. There is no sewing involved; the original is just a long leather rectangle with some holes cut out. There is a slight indentation around the perimeter; I believe it is purely decorative in nature but I am not entirely sure. Sorry if I am omitting any important details. I myself am unfamiliar with leatherworking, but I will try to answer any questions to the best of my ability. Please send me a message or email if you think this is something you could do! My email is nathan zemp at gmail dot com (remove all spaces and replace "at" and "dot" with symbols). Thank you! Nathan
  3. Hi everyone, I wanted to share that I have many new buckles for sale in my ETSY store https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/ReliquariaMedieval . These are all authentic historical shapes, but the best part is, they are not the kind of designs you can find in the average craft store. I've been lucky enough to have a couple of fantasy armourers work with me and the buckles (and armour -wink!) look great. I've had some questions about the quality of these items - they are solid brass/bronze (depending on the amount of tin), very heavy and strong. They are cast pieces so each one is unique and you will see slight imperfections from the casting process. If there ever is a problem, I will always replace the broken piece (but of over 600 sales I've only had one broken piece). I would be honoured if you would consider using some of my items in your designs. -Ellaire Here's a couple more.
  4. I've typically just bought from the shop in town. But at the rate I go through leather it's adding up and got me thinking that I should consider other options, everything else I use I tend to buy wholesale and this got me going down the rabbit hole of the internet trying to find a Canadian tannery or wholesale option. I've had no luck with this with the exception of a couple guys that tan leather out of deer hides or I might find a supplier that's little cheaper but then the shipping costs within Canada make it not worth it. Right now I'm using around 6-8oz latigo leather for strapping on backpacks and paying around $15CAD a sqf which seems to be the going rate in Canada for retail? Has anyone found a good online supplier, tannery or wholesale in Canada? Similar to Hide House or anything like that? There are quite a few options in the US but as other Canadians know it's the shipping and duties that kill that option and make it too pricey. Curious if anyone has found anything in Canada? Or if you're Canadian and buy from the US what's your experience like and who have you used?

  6. Hello all, we are so excited to be up and running in Canada now.. it has been so hard finding exactly what we personally want for our own leather goods and crafting needs which is the main reason we wanted to set up a wholesale supply shop! Bringing in hides such as Horween and as well as many other very high quality hides for everyone here is the goal. We want to craft with the best and we want everyone else to have the same access. It is such an honour to be amongst all of you in this community and we are simply looking for our little space in this big world. My name is Ian, the founder and owner and if anyone ever has any questions at all please do not hesitate to reach out! OA Leather Supply
  7. Does anyone know what the best leather sewing machine is for -easy operating system for someone with arthritis -still classify myself as a beginner - mostly sewing belts, purses, light horse tack ( bridles, breast collars, etc.) -able to be shipped to Canada -quality for price Thank you all in advance for your time and effort in this matter, Christine
  8. hey everyone, I need some needles, bobbins and bobbin holders for my Singer 29K58 and my Singer 31-15. Is there someone in Canada who carries such things and if so, whom???
  9. Hello all, Does anyone know of any tanneries left in Canada? I'm specifically looking for veg tanned, but it would be interesting to know even if chrome tanned only. Side quest: I'm also looking for a weaving mills in Canada that make canvas. it seems like there is absolutely no industries left in canada except petrol, wood, stones and wheat.
  10. Hello, I am located in Calgary, Alberta Canada. I make bags using heavy canvas (usually coated with PU or oiled etc). Parts of the bags have two thicknesses of heavy seatbelt webbing sewn on. I currently use a Singer 491-clutch motor (with 69 bonded nylong thread and size 18 needle) and have to do alot of backtacking and stitch length manipulation to ensure that the strapping/handles are durable enough for the 35 pound bags. I now need to make bags that hold more weight and need to upgrade my machine to produce a durable product. I also work with leather and would like to start making leather bags and based on my research here think that the Adler 267 or Consew 206 would be a good choice/price for sewing Canvas and Leather products. I know that there are alot of other machines that would do the trick as well e.g. Pfaff, Reliable corp, Singer, Mach, Cowboy, Cobra but they seem to be really pricey. I would be perfectly happy with a super old machine that works well as long as the price is right. Servo/Sewpro may not be necessary as I am able to slow my current clutch motor machine enough for my needs. Please let me know if you have one of the above machines for sale or if you have a better recommendations and would be able to ship it here. Thanks so much, Arlene
  11. Hey there all you leather experts! I'm a brand new newbie here, I have never worked with leather, I don't even own any tools yet. I've been interested in leather for a while, I just haven't yet taken the opportunity to actually learn how to work with it. I've been browsing the forum and looking at other people's work, it appears that there are quite a few artisans showing off their work here! I think for starters I'll pick up some basic tools and work on the Basic Leather Carving Tutorial.
  12. Had a customer ask me to make a day planner with the Royal Canadian Legion crest on it. Not being one to back down from a challenge, I said yes. On second thought, I should have said no I'm thinking a single stain so the crest doesn't pop so much but will still be visible when looking at it. I still need to do the word stamping on it But, let me know what you think so far
  13. Hi, I was wondering if somebody could recommend a supplier for english bridle leather in Canada, specifically ontario or at least nearby. I've been able to find a few places out west to order from but the cost of shipping doesn't really make it cost effective. I've also looked at American suppliers nearby but with the American dollar so high it ends up being more expensive than shipping a side from out west. I would be a really big help if somebody could recommend a supplier. Thanks!
  14. Hey Folks, I'm just getting interested in leatherwork, kinda started my first project tonight, real simple, quick key fob, Ill post a pic as soon as I figure this out and have a sec. I even just got my set today from a another gentlemen who got out of doing it, so I've got a lot to start with. Im mostly going to be interested in belts, key fobs, and were im a firefighter by trade, firefighting stuff like radio straps and holsters. so if anyone has any patterns for such items, please...send away! also looking for folks from this area, I don't have a real good supply system where i'm at, other than ordering online from a province across the puddle. thanks so much, this site seems like it will be very helpful, and a great tool in itself, and everyone seems very friendly! thanks again,, Dave
  15. Our Canadian treeless saddle making business has been around since 1993. With unique designs and proven design performance, our saddles have a dedicated following of users. The market has not been maximized and our advertising has been mostly through our dealer network and customer reviews. Huge potential to increase profits and sales within this special saddle market. Ideally this business would be taken over by an owner with existing shop workers and machinery within North America. Sales numbers are only limited by manufacturing output. Current owner is willing to interface with purchaser to ease transition and to ensure manufacturing processes. Price for business is negotiable, depending on equipment desired, owner involvement and scope of product control desired. Please contact Dana sensationride@shaw.ca for further details. see the website www.nickerssaddlery.com
  16. Just moved to Toronto from the US recently and have been looking for a source for exotic leathers, specifically alligator/croc/python. Many online retailers from the US will not ship to Canada unless you place a large order due to all the paperwork involved. Does anyone know of an exotic leather supplier already in Canada, or of a supplier overseas who will deal in small quantities? Thanks in advance.
  17. Hi, I am the leatherwytch. I am not new to leather but I am new to here. I have been doing leather since I was kid and that is not yesterday. I am now getting into quivers as something new and different. I am here because no matter how old you are, you are never too old to learn something new. I am from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Yes, yeehaw!
  18. Hello, all, I'm so happy this place exists, and I hope to learn as much as I can from my betters. I've already read many previous posts, and I'm sure my craft will improve with such wonderful people willing to help and share their experiences. I've recently met a local carpenter willing to make a stitching horse for me here in Toronto, so I will post pics of this soon. I was going to make my own (MacGyver style), but I figured I could support a local craftsman and receive a quality piece of functional furniture. I can't wait to start making some larger projects with it and posting them for scrutiny and advice. Cheers, Lolligagger
  19. Hey guys. My uncle is having a cow butchered in a month or so (he owns a farm) and i was just wondering if you guys new were i could get the hide tanned? I live in Toronto Canada. Thanks a ton guys! -Peter
