  1. Finished this beauty and had it delivered this last weekend. This was my fourth quiver, and the first Mongolian Horse Quiver I've made. This quiver was a blast to make, even if the stitching took way longer than I would have liked (the longer it takes the more movies I get to watch, right?). This style of quiver was design to wear strapped to the thigh and would traditionally hold six arrows.
  2. Thought I’d share my first attempt at making a case. It’s based on the Utility Case shown in The Art of Making Leather Cases Vol 2. page 60 with different dimensions. The handle, Handle No. 20 page 23 (same volume). Oak leaf carving on left side panel based on CitzenKates post on this site: Demo: Oak Leaves. Only experience with leather working I have is that a couple of weeks ago I picked up the Tandy Deluxe Leather Carving kit. Got tired of flowery bookmarks and coasters quite rapidly and wanted to really push myself. Laid out/measured up the cutting patterns in Sketchup before hand. Ran into trouble trying to figure out how long to make the handles and couldn’t find any advice or comment on handle length in the above-mentioned Stohlman book; upon assembly discovered the handles are a fair bit too short! Thankfully still usable, but it’d be more comfortable for each handle to have been 2 to 4 inches longer. Not sure if there’s any way I can address this after the fact though. Also discovered that I hadn’t thought through where the latch would end up… did get a latch but didn’t lay out the location beforehand so if I were to attach a latch it would end up smack dab in the middle of the carving on the front panel. Now looking for other strategies to close the lid - almost thinking maybe snaps? And the next fairly major oversight is that I mounted the handle shield too to high. This results in the inability to close the lid fully since the flap hits the D-rings. Am wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to modify/remedy this issue? Can see from the photos I have some more burnishing to do on that top panel… Critique, criticism, suggestions, modifications to improve the case, additional finishing, etc. much appreciated.
  3. Some time ago I forged a small blade. Then I put in the drawer where it spent a lot of time. Since I need a present for friend o' mine, I pulled the blade out its hideout, assembled the knife and also made neck sheath for it. Hope, she will like it.
  4. What do folks use for temporary backing for preventing stretch during carving/stamping/embossing of cased leather? Most of my work is < 3" wide and includes belts, straps and long narrow cases. Thanks! Bob
  5. Local knife maker (www.ripcustomknives) made a show knife for the upcoming Atlanta Knife Show and asked me to make a custom sheath for it. His theme is skulls and the knife is Japanese tanto style with a forged, 150+ layer Damascus steel blade, 10-1/4" long. Total length is 15-1/2". This is what I made him. Hand sheath with a removal belt holster. The carving is based on a Japanese style skull tattoo. Carved and dyed it in one piece, then cut down the middle to make the front and back.
  6. I never thought I would be doing this again. About 30 years ago I made a wallet with a harness racing scene on it. Still in use today y my father-in-law. Last week I was asked if I could make it again. Someone wanted it for their 85 year old grandfather who kept horses all his life (and still has one). Proving, no matter what your wife says, you should never throw anything out, I was able to find my original mylar tracing pattern. For the younger folks on the forum, to put the time frame between projects in perspective, when the first one was done: The internet did not exist. Portable cell phone weighed 5 lbs and you carried in a bag the size of your mothers purse. Fax machines were the new technology rage. I had just gotten my first laptop. It had 640K memory, 10 mb hard drive and cost $6,000. No such thing as a digital camera, let alone one in your phone. First three pictures are the 2018 version. Last two pictures are the 1988 ish version.
  7. Finally got up the nerve to dye this project. Tri-leg stool seat with a "fierce fish" carving (modified tattoo design). Carve this about 6 month ago but did some practice on smaller pieces before deciding how to do the dye job. 9 oz veg tan. Fiebings dark brown dye, neatsfoot oil, Tandy Ecoflo chestnut hi-lite stain, many coats of 50/50 Resolene/water top coat sprayed on with an air brush applied in that order. #9 copper rivets to attach the leg pockets. On to the legs...
  8. hi everyone, I did start to learn leather carving, i do have These Tools 3.day now. I do have over 10years experiences with leather bags, but this is something completely new and exciting for me. I think, i do make somewhere huge mistakes: either with not enough depth of a cut or also this can be using of wrong hammer maybe ? I do sending some Pictures, would be very glad for your help. have a nice Weekend, Sling
  9. Hello everyone, I am trying to find out where I can get a couple of stamps being used in these two pictures. The first picture I am wanting the circle stamps of different sizes. On the second picture I'd like to find a flower center like this one. Thank you!
  10. Hello everyone, I am trying to find out where I can get a couple of stamps being used in these two pictures. The first picture I am wanting the circle stamps of different sizes. On the second picture I'd like to find a flower center like this one. Thank you!
  11. Looking for some advice on how to create a border like this. Mainly on what stamps to use and where to find them. The project is a large leather-topped desktop so hoping to figure out some way of keeping the stamping simple as its going around a large area. Also would love any advise on where to find any flowing vine/leaf pattern stamps in general (as in example 3). Thanks in advance.
  12. This is some beautiful carving and coloring! I would like to get an idea on how it was done. The coloring is very chrisp and pretty is this just experience of is it the method? Also what are the steps to coloring like this? It seams line they used antique paste but not for the background coloring only the carving. Please help me figure this out! Payton
  13. Howdy guys and gals. One of my friends asked me to make this journal for his Christmas gift to his girlfriend. The leather is 8/9 oz. European single bend from Tandy. Let me know what you think. Critique and comments are always welcome. (Note the screwdriver petal lifter in the second pic. I got the idea from YinTx in his post.)
  14. Hi guys, I'm relatively new to leatherwork, and brand new to the forum, so I hope someone can help! I've only played around with a few belts until now, with modest success, but I stumbled upon a BEAUTIFUL guitar strap made by singer Johnny Fritz and I was hoping to do something similar. I have attached a picture. In particular, I noticed some linework that doesn't seem to be done with the usual beveler/backgrounder. I'm referring to the arrows near the middle, or the 3 little { shaped marks above the word Ezra. Even the letters of the name Ezra appear to be done by hand. It may well be that I'm just too inexperienced to know it, but I can't imagine doing this with the standard set of tools I have. It seems like it's more of an outline, an even trench tooled into the leather. The arrows, for example, don't appear to be raised or lowered, but simply flush with the surface of the leather, and the outline is uniformly indented. Any idea how this is achieved? Lastly, the colour on the letters is very clear, is that just painted on after antiquing? I hope someone can help! Thanks in advance. Ben Huckleberry, Adelaide, Australia.
  15. When I was starting to work with leather, my brother-in-law gave me a box of all his scraps. Most of it was latigo. A few years later, I wanted to build myself an archery quiver, as I shoot archery tournaments at Renaissance faires. I decided to try working with that box of scraps. I came up with a completely unique design, and tried tooling a bit on a couple scraps I wasn't using. After a few failures, I decided, with little actual training from an experienced leather worker, to try carving my designs, then try to tool it from there. I started by carving my designs first, then I laid a wet cloth on the leather until it started absorbing the water, then began tooling. SUCCESS! I created an incredible looking quiver, with a lot of great Celtic knotwork and my personal emblem on it. I brought it to the local leather supply to show a friend that worked there, and has since been promoted to district manager. He looked it over, complimented me on the work, but said it shouldn't have worked using latigo leather. It actually only took me two days to complete the carving and tooling for all the panels, but assembly took about five days, and lots of blood from sticking myself with the needles. I'll post a few pictures in a few hours as I have to unbury it from my mobile workshop.
  16. I can finally post these now that the contest is open. A special commission to create custom knife sheaths for TripleX Knives in Nova Scotia (www.xxxknives.com) for a global Instagram contest they are running. If you have an Instagram account to can view the contest details here until October 5th: https://is.gd/k8oE6I Large knife has a 9" blade. 30 deg cross draw with a removal dangler option. Small knife is a 3.5" blade with a dangler. Had free reign on these so took the opportunity to work on my carving and coloring techniques.
  17. Hello, friends. I introduce knives to you. Knives made of brass, assembled on two bearings. I do any design. The price is from 120 to 210 $. If you want, i can make a gold-plated knife.
  18. Just finished this sleeve for a Mother's Day gift for my wife. This is the second sleeve I've made. I think it's a big improvement over the first one. I used 8/9 oz. leather. The handle is molded Kydex with 2/3 oz. wrapped around it and attached with rapid rivets. It is much sturdier than the all leather handle on my first attempt. The next one I make I will try reinforcing it with molded raw hide. I welcome any comments or suggestions.
  19. Thought you folks would like a look. I made my first ever messenger bag or briefcase. Did some carving work, Copper rivets, sewing too of course. Has a main inside pouch, a smaller area for paper and pens and pencils. Two outside pockets for the cell phone and what not. Now I wish I knew what leather I used, its stuff I had around but I am not sure they type. I really like the color and the texture. The carving work was just for fun and that is of course tooling leather Veg tan. Open to all thoughts. Enjoy Ross
  20. Hello, I’m looking for a name for my leathercraft shop/business. I’m not quite ready to start selling yet, though I would like to have a name and website started and a stamp with my “brand” made. At the moment my Instagram is “Crooked K Leather”: I’m not so fond of it anymore because it’s not too professional. Here is my dilemma, I would have liked “Hoffman Custom Leather”: My last name is Hoffman which is practically unavailable in every realm. I could use my name or middle name but I don’t want anything too feminine. I thought of naming the business after my father from fort worth who is fighting cancer and donate but his name is Jay Lynn. Which is also a big name in the leather world: Jay lynn gore –(Circle Y, pattern designer, Tool maker etc.) So I’m Kind of stumped on name ideas. I want to keep it close to home and short: ____ custom Leather or ____ Leather. I like letters and brands for my logo. im doing western style items and want to do tack in the future. Any ideas would be appreciated.
  21. Hi All I am having some difficulty with a lego belt, ie carving lego blocks onto a belt. I just cannot get them to look right, either they look puffy or just wrong. Please help! Pip
  22. I think i will have a lot of very basic questions to start out??? Not sure if this is the right area. I want to practice with a swivel knife, but dont want to waste any tool leather, as i dont have any scrap yet, i do have loads of split leather, can i use this to practice on? Oh and loads of bags for full grain old leather scavanged from a leather couch. Thanks.
  23. I am from overseas and will be in Arizona for the summer and was hoping to stock up on quality tools for leather carving and tooling. I was wondering if anyone could recommend somewhere in Arizona where I might be able to buy tools from someone who is really skilled in tooling. I brought some of my work with me hoping to have a professional see where I can improve and what tools I should buy to help improve my work. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!
  24. First of I'm new to the forums, my name is Jordan and I just started getting into leather craft like a month or two ago. I originally wanted to make motorcycle seats but the more I've been messing around I've been wanting to make different things! that being said, I just bought a super clean singer 29-4. I ordered some #69 bonded nylon and it finally came in today. I've been trying to mess around and get the machine to sew in some 2-4oz vegtan single layer but the thread will go in the first hole then just lay across the rest of the holes. I read somewhere that if it does that the tension is too loose, but the shuttle is as tight as it will go and if I tighten the disks anymore the thread stops. But when I try to sew denim it sews almost perfect. Am I missing something??? I'd appreciate any help or info! Thank you! Quote
  25. Howdy I'm sort of new to leather working. I've made a few holsters here and there, and I understand most of the basics. I'm wanting to get into tooling leather, and I also need a few other proper tools like a round knife. I'm also a college student, so money is a little tight. I'm hoping to get good enough to start selling some of my work, and use the money from that to help fund more tool purchases. Right now, I'm just wanting to get a good, basic set of stamps that will get me started on tooling, and a good draw knife for cutting out holsters (#70 or #71?). Any suggestions? Thanks. -Tex
