  1. Hello everyone! I am looking for some suggestions on a supplier to buy buckles, rings, D-rings, snaps and rivets for dog accessories here in Canada. I am based in Montreal and in the are the only one that I know is Cuir Desrocher. I've also looked up other store in different provinces like Lonsdale leather, Longview leather and some in the US like Buckle Guy. But my problem is that I didn't find the right design or the prices are high. Do you have any suggestion? Thank you!
  2. I was curious if anyone knew the name of the hardware on this leather piece (not the shackle). I have looked everywhere and tried buying different parts to try to make them. I have seen then on expensive items and also made cheaply. The ones I have tried purchasing are held in on the other side of the leather by screws. They don't seem to have a plate that is generally seen with bag hardware. The bag hardware I did try tends to have a thickness of the loop at maybe 6mm or so and shallow as to make it sort of hard to pass anything through it. I am looking for maybe a 3mm thickness in the metal itself.. I hope yall have some ideas, this is driving me crazy. Also does anyone have any tips for collar/cuff sizing? I would really like to start doing custom, but I have zero confidence. One of my measurements for a cuff was small and another was too large. I was taking actual measurement and adding 1/2 an inch. I am not sure which specifications to follow for leather collars. Also if anyone has tools for accurately measuring the sides of what is already made. I have a mandrel for bracelets. Not quite sure how to accurately do collars. Thanks!!
  3. Tried my hand at a cat collar, had a model that generally does not like to wear a collar. Let me know what ya'll think! Will try a narrower version for the next time... still looking for a good source of small buckles for this kind of application. YinTx
  4. Hi All, just wanted to post something. Have been lurking around for the last couple of months. Still very new to leather craft. Im about 2 months in. Here is one of my most recent collars. It was an experiment and its not too bad. The dye work is a bit poor on the coloured parts, especially the black marks ?(I have since got hold of some leather paint instead of using dye), so hopefully the next ones will be cleaner. Hand aged hardware, rabbit fur accent and padded. All hand stitched. As a total beginner I'm pretty happy with it.
  5. Hi everyone! This is my first project - lots of learning happened here! Plenty of things to tweak for next time. Sally competes in a bunch of dog sports, so I wanted something that's quick and easy to get on and off but is going to be comfortable for an excited dog to wait her turn in. This is roughly patterened off a coursing lead, photos attached of how it works. I'll add some chicago screws next to the dee rings when they arrive next week, and I'll swap the blue rope out for a colour that suits it a bit better once I get a splicing fid - the shopping list just keeps getting longer... I'm also going to add a removable martingale loop, so she can wear it as a collar for walks in town - just a pain to get a martingale collar over those ears so the slip lead is better for competition.
  6. Here is a collar I made for our Dachshund from English bridle. It is a bit over built, but that is how I wanted it. fully lined, including the strap, with 2-3 oz veg tan. Had a bit of trouble with the edge kote sticking. It might be a bad batch.
  7. At a concert recently, a friend was having a problem with the inexpensive leather choker she was wearing. She said it was so uncomfortable that she had to take it off. So, for her upcoming birthday, I put together an alternative that I think will be more comfortable (and safer). The chains on the front are optional; they have lobster-claw clasps at each end for easy removal and re-attaching. Elastic is integrated for "give," and the the links on the adjustment chain in the back are "breakaway." Just sharing! Thanks.
  8. Hi, I've been lurking here for a little while. Figured I'd actually contribute instead of hiding in the proverbial hedges and peering out at you all from between the leaves. A little about me: I'm from Wisconsin, (I literally live down the street from where I grew up, so I've not strayed far...) I am a care worker, have been for probably 15 years but I have an odd assortment of talents/interests. I'm an artist/graphic designer/illustrator (freelance it when I have time). As an artist, I'm really interested in tooling - Its like sculpting and drawing and painting all rolled into one. I also train/rehabilitate horses (and dogs) whenever I get the chance. I have wanted to get into leather work for a long time and never really could manage it. My line of work pays badly, and leather and tools are expensive so I'm getting to it a little later than I'd have liked. I would like to start making horse tack. Bridles/headstalls, breast collars, and eventually saddles, but you know, start small. So the first thing I've made (aside from a rather bad wrist band that my husband wears out of charity) is a collar for our little dog Oscar. It turned out ok, except I didn't measure to the center of the band to punch holes for the rivets so they are a bit off center. At any rate here it is. (Probably should add: I'm obviously up for constructive criticism/suggestions!) Emily
  9. Hi y’all - I’ve been an off-and-on lurker on these forums for a while, & now I have a specific question! I’ve been working on coming up with & testing a solid dog collar design for my goofball German Shepherd. I keep having issues with my collars stretching. For the most recent one, I used a midweight veg tan leather with a softer leather backing, & it was better than previous designs, but still ended up stretching significantly. Should I go to a heavier weight veg? Try backing the veg with harness or latigo leather? Are there certain finishes or treatments that would help stiffen the leather & provide water protection? All ideas & experience appreciated! I want to come up with a design that can be tooled on the outside but still hold up to all the wear that a dog will put a collar through. Thanks! Kambra
  10. So we got a little puppy and is now starting to chew quite a bit. While my beagle and now new puppy were together she started to chew his old collar and tore it up so I made him a new one. Made of 4-5 oz veg tanned dyed in royal blue Fiebings pro dye. 1/2" letter stamped and stiched with 138 Bonded nylon in gold.
  11. I made my first dog collar using a crocodile (or alligator? I don't know how to tell them apart) embossed 1-1/4" belt blank I bought from local Tandy store. I lined it with 3-4 oz veg tan and sewed it with 207 thread. Buckle and D ring secured with Chicago screws. Fiebings oil dye and finished with Resolene followed by wax. Edges are finished with two coats of Giardini black edge paint. I hope it's not too thick - I made it for my son's dog (50 lb pit bull named Petey) and I wanted it to be secure. I think it will soften up a bit with use. I hand stitched the buckle end with .8 mm Tiger thread, but it looks a lot whiter than I expected compared to the other thread I used - guess if it doesn't blend in more with use I can always reset this part. i think for my next collar I will try some bridle or Latino leather - any suggestions which would be better? i appreciate all comments and criticisms! Gary '
  12. Just wondering if anyone out there would have a pattern for a Dog Harness, with & without a chest plate. I have never made one even though they look easy enough to make, I dont want to stuff up along the way as it is for a customer. This is the dog it will be going on. Cheers Damien
  13. Completed Custom 3" dog collar. 3" x 4.5mm Bridle Leather Body down to 2" buckle ends, Heavy Duty 2" x 5mm Stainless Steel D-Ring, 12mm Dog Spikes, 2" Double Tongue Buckle, Brass Riveted Name, Kangaroo Leather backing, Fully Hand Stitched. This is my first attempt at building anything like this. I think it came out alright, but will make a few changes if any others come my way.
  14. He'll fellow leather workers. I've been pottering with leather for a couple of years and have taught myself everything I get wrong! The wonders of you tube! Below is a selection of things I've done.
  15. I was wondering what you guys would suggest for finishing/waterproofing a dog collar. So far I've only made items that won't really see much heavy use outdoors and I've been happy using super sheen on them(purses and small cases and such), I'm looking to make a collar for a working lab, so it's going to get wet and see a fair bit of use. I have super sheen, acrylic resolene, and feibings snow proof paste, could I use the snow proof paste as a finish in itself? or should I put it on top of one of the other finishes? I wouldn't want to use neatsfoot oil because I plan to colour it and it turns everything pretty dark. And could any one suggest how to protect the back side of the collar? I was thinking of sewing two pieces of leather together back to back to get the right thickness, could I use the same finish then on the back? Any help on this would be appreciated! Denene
  16. Hello All, I want to make some collars, harness and leashes for pet. I have the models and I am looking for a craftsman to help me. Anyone offer this service in NY area? Thank you
  17. Hi, This is my first leatherwork, a collar for my dog. Leather strap is 3mm thick veg tanned leather dyed with vinegaroon, lining is sheep leather 1,2mm thick, veg tanned and already dyed fawn when bought. It is handstitched. I'm aware to advices and critique.
  18. I have been using gum trag to finish the edges on all my other products, and it works alright. I was considering trying out fiebings saddle soap instead, to see how it works, but I recently heard that some animals might be allergic to glycerine, and I will be making some dog collars. So, does fiebings saddle soap have glycerine in it? Is it true that some animals might be allergic to it? If anyone has had any experiences with this, that would be very helpful. Also, as always, if there are any better/safer methods, feel free to advise! Thanks Zayne
  19. The collar is upside down in the pic, but I turned it over the right way now. You get the idea anyway.
  20. Hi there, I am looking for a custom collar for my german shepherd dog... and possibly my two dogs not far down the road. I am looking for a craftsman that is able to do something like this: I want a different concept, but I mean in terms of leather working type. I'm really not all that creative, so I'm not entirely closed to a style like that. I want an arthurian legend themed collar so if you think you can nail the concept I give you whether by that type of work or something even that is more simple without all the etching and just... like... pendants on it or something. Before we start collaborating I would like some sort of references or if you have some sort of shop to link me to it so I know my money is going into what I asked for haha.
  21. Hi all, I have been coming here for help for a while now but this is my first post. I know you will all be able to help. I have a business selling leather dog collars, and I recently got some startling feedback from a customer. It seems that she bought one of my collars and after about a month of use it was very badly stretched, discolored and brittle. She apparently has a very active dog and it gets "heavy outdoor use" including being worn while swimming sometimes (not sure how often) and bathing. She did oil it several times to keep it conditioned, but still had very poor results with it. You can see from the before (not the exact collar) and after pics what it looked like. The black collar in the after pic is not one I made, only the undyed one. Here is some info about the construction of the collar: Leather is 6/7oz (I have since switched to 9/10oz) double shoulder from Tandy 1" wide with beveled edges No dye used, finished with 3 coats of Angelus Acrylic Finisher Good coating of Neetsfoot oil applied after finisher I am basically wondering what I can do differently (other than increasing thickness of leather since I already have done that) to make my collars last better. I have been in business for 4 years and have never had feedback of this nature before, so I don't know if it was the use of the collar or the production that was the problem. I have noticed that my undyed collars often feel more pliable than the dyed ones and have been wondering if the dye itself perhaps has some preservative qualities. Should I be using a neutral leather dye on collars that are not to be colored? Any info or tips you all could give would be appreciated.
  22. I have been looking at other leatherwork for inspiration, and I found this collar. I'm curious as to how both the black lining on the inside and the pink edging are attached. The first picture is of the front of the collar. It looks to me like a normal hem; the leathers were put facing each other, a stitch was run, and then the pink was folded back over. But then, how was the black lining piece in the back attached? If it was sewn, wouldn't it punch through to the front of the collar?
